New sweater dress- with booties or tall boots?

I just acquired this sweater dress at Old Navy of all places after searching high and low for one that fit me. I'm trying to figure out what boots look best with it (for a casual dinner with friend tomorrow night)

I also just bought the taupe booties in pic#2 and am trying to get used to the look with skirts and bare legs - I fear it may be stumpifying! I'm a bootie newbie.

Preferences? Is it just going to take me time to get used to the look of short boots with skirts?

I'm not the one to ask about proportions and the like - I'm a total style newbie. But I wanted to say real quick that I LOVE the dress, and you look wonderful in it!

I like the tall boots I personally don't like booties with skirts/dresses, unless they are black booties with black tights, so the leg line doesn't get broken. The dress is very nice!

Gorgeous! Short or tall boots - they both look great. I get surprised quite often about how nice some things are at Old Navy

If you don't mind me asking -what camera did you use to shoot this?

I like the tall boots a lot, but I'd also wear it with tights that match the tone of booties, so cream/light grey for those booties.

Short booties and that much bare leg just looks COLD I guess with a dress that cozy, maybe that's what's throwing us off?

Clarissa- yes, that's my concern too. I've seen this look used successfully by other petite ladies here at YLF, but seem to have trouble pulling it off myself!

Nanabear- it's a canon 5D mark 2 with a 135 f/2 lens - my husband is an amateur photographer so I had to go ask him

Anne- I totally get what you're saying- and we're actually in a cold snap right now and I WAS cold while outside.

I like both! I think I would go with whatever is more appropriate for the weather.

Well now I'm thinking I should try it with leggings and black booties- I'll try to get a new pic sometime tomorrow with alternative 3. All of you sensible people have convinced me that bare legs in November might seem a bit crazy...

I would suggest tights with the dress and the boots - more because, to me, the texture of the dress is "heavy" against a bare leg. It would also balance out the space between the dress and whatever boot you choose to wear. Leggings would also work.

If you go with tights, I think you can wear either boot or bootie. To make the bootie create more of a "line" with the dress, what about a patterned tight that has the taupe of the bootie and grey in the dress? It might be a bit of a tall order for tonight! The other idea that might give more of a line is to bookend your look - wear a matching belt with whatever boot you use and a long necklace or scarf (tucked in under cowl) with similar colors. This will create a line of continuity (along with tights) in the outfit.

The other thing you can do is wear leggings with flat shoes, a belt and a scarf. That would also be cute with this sweater dress.

The dress is super cute on you! I think you'll be able to wear any style of boot with it - just play with your styling options and learn as you go!

I'm getting to really like the look of booties with skirts and dresses. But I agree with what others have mentioned that adding some legwear will help pull the look together, regardless of the shoe you choose. I do not feel that booties are making you look stumpy, so throw that fear away. Just give yourself time to adjust to the look!

I like both, but I think my preference would be the tall boots. They look very streamlined. Great dress too.

Also wanted to add that the sweater dress looks fab on you. I have given up on sweater dresses after much searching -- I simply cannot find one that fits and flatters me enough to bother. I will live vicariously through you!

I like both, with a slight preference for the tall boots. I like Krista's ideas about tights/scarf/flat shoes. You have a lot of styling options with this sweater dress and you'll be able to wear it many different ways!

I think you got some good suggestions but just wanted to say I don't think the nude booties with bare legs are stumping you

Krista nailed it! So I wont' repeat:) I will say however that you look great and the booties are not all shortening on you. I do think the light boots and nude legs will work but not with such a heavy dress and perhaps in slightly warmer weather.
