I don't think a red shirt is unacceptable for an interview. I was really surprised to read that.

I personally always wear white with a gray suit, but I don't think it's mandatory - especially in my industry, where people often interview in jeans and tshirts.

It can be tricky to figure out what to wear in these types of fields! I once interviewed for an archaeology job that was office based, so I dressed for a normal interview. The people who interviewed me were dressed like archaeologists, though -- jeans and hiking boots! I got the position but I felt a little silly in my suit and heels.
