New mom needs new clothes - YouLookFab Forum

Hi - I'm a new mom who is lucky enough to be able to stay home full time with my 4 month old baby boy.... My closet is filled with pre-baby "business work" clothes which I obviously cannot wear in my new "role." I have been livng in (getting by with) stretchy black workout pants and several plain nursing tops which is easy and comfortable but I would like to add some cute outfits to feel put together when I leave the house...

BTW, I just bought a pair of straight leg Paige jeans at NAS online which I'm anxiously waiting to get in the mail. I rationalize that it would be a workhorse piece (IF it fits right ie. no muffin top)

I've studied Angie's MOTG formulas posts but as you can imagine, I don't have much time to shop in stores or online so I would love your help finding a few key pieces online to add to my new mom wardrobe.

NM -- just a word on Paige jeans, especially post-partum. I can't speak for the brand as a whole, but the only pair I ever ordered in my usual size were so tiny I couldn't get them zipped. My point is, if that happens, don't be discouraged! It's not you.

Can you give us a sense of your general shape and style? Also, a word on the climate you live in would be helpful.

Congratulations on the birth of your son -- and welcome. Lots of good advice and support here, and plenty of fabulously stylish MOTGs (or is it MsOTG...)

Hello and welcome!! Congratulations on the baby and for taking the time to take care of yourself too. I think lots of us have been where you are. Although I went back to work after I had my kids, I still needed plenty of MOTG outfits and new business clothes for my very different body. When I got here I didn't know how to dress my new body. Most of my clothes were 10 years old or more, dated, showing their wear and ill fitting. It's been a long journey but I'm finally feeling calm when I think about walking into my closet and getting dressed. I started with Angie's MOTG formulas. Post some WIW's and we will make suggestions.

To point you in the right direction, it would be useful to know your size! From your member profile I can see you are an apple with rectangle tendencies, which is quite far from my body type (pear) so I don't really know first hand where to start. Have you already looked at this blog entry?

I'm new here and really can't share any wisdom but the ladies are awesome in helping you and telling you why or why not on something.

Pictures work better than words for suggestions as even if you are the same body type you generally share different characteristics of that type as well as natural attributes.

I don't know how to describe my style... I tend to wear a lot of black and gravitate toward jewel tones (purples, blues, burgundys) I like Ann Taylor Loft's style ....but for some reason their tops fit me awkwardly and always end up returning anything I buy from there.

Congratulations on your new baby! I would advise taking it slow - your body is going to be changing pretty dramatically over the next 6 months to a year, so you probably won't want to go whole hog on a new wardrobe all at once. That will give you give you time to study outfits that Angie and other forum members post and get a feel for what resonates with you and what doesn't. Then you can start to put something together. I'd invest in a great pair of boots (or two) for fall, since those will fit you no matter what and will make you feel terrific. There were also some looser cardis that Angie picked out from NAS that would be good for fall and would also adjust to your changing body shape - a jeans/boots/layering tee/cardi/scarf outfit would be a fab MOTG formula for fall. Enjoy this time - I just LOVED four months, as my kids started to be more interactive and engaged.

Good jeans will give you a great start. Then you need some casual tops, a couple of scarves and a few cardigans. Comfortable but still stylish footwear really helps and I would suggest boots. If you can do leggings, denim ones from Gap are wonderful. make sure you have a good bra fitting so the girls look perky!

I am going to echo sarah - We tend to share our purchases and recommendations on case by case basis, so first I think would be to assess exactly what type of item you need in terms of fitting your lifestyle and climate, and what style you are attracted to (checking out the shape posts as well as Imogen Lampert's shape suggestions (http://www.insideoutstyleblog.com/) can help get you grounded in some new things to try). Then, just browse Angie's suggestions as well as the forum and keep your eye out! When you do decide to try something be sure to post it because the feedback you'll get is really incredibly helpful...that's what keeps us all coming back!

Welcome and congrats on your new addition!!!! There are already some great ideas posted to get you started!!!! Jeans are a good workhorse to get started, a darker wash and the casual tops and cardis are great way to start!!! I agree with sarah take it slow and love what you buy!!

Thank you all so much for the advice and links and comments and helping me realize that I really should take it slow to rebuild the perfect minimal wardrobe... I know my body is still changing and need to spend wisely and be picky.... I'm just glad to be out of maternity clothes and want to look/feel fab again!
