New Knee High Boots... Return

HI Ladies,

I ordered these boots on line. They looked so lovely and sleek

What is the problem? Are they too long or just too big in the ankle? I am correct in thinking this is just too much slouch at the ankle.

They are leather so I wonder if they would soften into a better fit but I don't have high hopes.

Would appreciate your insight.

I don't know which I am afraid, but I do agree there is too much slouch for a sleek look.

They do appear to be very slouchy which takes away from the sleek look. Have you looked at Florsheims boots? a colleague wore a pair of sleek black Florsheim boots last winter and they always looked fantastic and she wore them consistently.

I really love the look of the boot themselves. THey are like the perfect tall black boot! But I agree, definitely don't like the amount of slouch and folding. It's too bad!

They look somehow to wide for you regardless of the slouch. Not quite good enough for you I think.

This has happened with some boots I tried that are softer leather (i.e. aren't stiff enough to stand up on their own) and which don't follow the contours of my ankle. I usually get a better fit with boots that zip or buckle or lace up if they are soft as I can adjust them tighter.

It's funny, they look like they fit around your calf, but the slouch is more than just at the ankle. It looks like it starts mid-calf and are quite slouchy all the way down to the ankle. I think the looseness all the way down is causing the issue. You can sometimes get away with a little looseness around the ankle (hard to avoid in this type of boot, I find) but this is almost all around looseness. Sadly, I don't think they are fab enough for you. Keep trying and good luck!

Yes they just look too roomy for you, both around the ankle and maybe a bit too tall too. I would prefer to see a more sleek fit than slouchy.

I feel your pain as I struggle to replace a worn but perfect pair of black, low heeled riding-ish boots that manage to be *just refined enough* while still practical. Since I was looking all last fall/winter I will diagnose these for you according to *my* criteria and maybe that will help you figure out what you are looking for... they are too loose in the ankle, but I found it was pretty much impossible to get sleek ankles in a pull-on boot, you need a zipper; the heel could be a bit higher, while still being relatively low and practical (trust me when i say I cannot wear "real' heels, but my perfect pair has about 1.5 inches of solid heel); and they are indeed a bit too high, something that narrows with your calf and stops just at the top of the calf curve rather than right under the knee is more flattering. Again I think this fitted-to-the-calf shape requires a zipper.
I could not find what I was looking for and compromised in the end. Such a simple thing that turned out to be really hard!

Ah, that poochy ankle thing is the bane of my existence! In my case it's caused by a combo of narrow ankles and wide calves. Nobody makes boots for 15" calves and 7.5" ankles! My feet are also very low volume so there's often bagginess in the foot as well.

Lace ups work well. And my Blondo boots that I bought this winter are surprisingly sleek. Don't know if you can get Blondo down under though.

Deborah, I think these boots look a little too soft and baggy, which isn't what you want with a sleek style! I also think they are too tall. Knee boots should actually hit you a couple of inches below your knee, and these come right up to your knee joint. I call it the Puss in Boots effect.

(I'm hyper-aware of this because, as a shortie, this happens a lot to me! It throws off the proportions of the outfit).

Thanks so much for input. I was so frustrated when I tired them on. They are pull on, but they have a small side zip and an small elastic panel at the back. Clearly not enought to 'stucture' the boot. I have never really had much trouble with boots. I have slim legs with my calves and ankles being on the average side. Oh well. Back they go, and the search continues.:)

How annoying In my experience it is hard to find a sleek leather boot that doesn't have a full side zipper.

Thanks Caro! Now I know what I am looking for. I do have two pairs of pull on boots but both are suede and one laces at the back, but still have a side zipper and the other have a half length side zipper but they are designed with a bit of slouch. What was particularly annoying is that the non leather black boots I am trying to replace look like a a million bucks compared to these when on:(

Bummer! I think the ladies have you sorted on why. Usually I've found that for a sleek ankle you need a boot to zip all the way up; the pull on styles leave room for your heel to swivel into the boot so there is always too much room in the ankle for a sleek look.

I'm so in sympathy with you! Sleek black boots have been my HEWI for a couple years now. It really isn't easy to find the right ones.

I agree with you, these have to go back. Too slouchy. I think it is that the leather is just too soft and doesn't have the structure it needs to give you a sleek look. Like Caro, I've found that mine really need a full zipper to fit properly. I'm fine with the look of real riding boots on others, but I like my ankle fitted because I want a tailored look. If you want a fitted ankle, a zip is essential.

I was in love with a pair of Tsubo boots that I had to return for the same reason. I loved them when I first tried them on, but after they warmed up for just a few minutes, they slouched and slumped.

We'll be looking for our HEWIs together.

More commiseration on finding well fitting sleek boots. It's so frustrating. In my hunt last fall/winter I never found a pair but added even more qualifiers to the list.
