New jeans, too low rise? ETA Yep.

I went thrifting for the first time in a month the other day. I was specifically looking for a pair of dark wash skinny jeans that didn't have that "vacuum sealed to the leg" look. I found these, which are juniors' as they usually fit me best in the legs. They have a 7 inch front rise, which DH jokes almost shows my Ceasarian scar (but not really). My white clams have this same rise and I manage to keep myself covered. I also have a pair of AG jeans on order from the NAS which have an 8 inch rise, so I will have another option.

The only thing that was bothering me on these has been resolved. When I took the pictures, the waistband (they should really call it a "gut-band" since it is no where near the geographical region of the waist) was digging into me a little. I sprayed it with water and wore them around and now they're strectched out enough to actually be comfortable. The legs are a little looser now too. They're 99% cotton and only 1% Spandex, which I really like. Okay I just stood up and slid them down over my hips (with a little tug) without undoing them. I think they'll pass the comfort test. At this rate the AG jeans will have to shine my shoes and wash my car to be worth their exorbitant price tag. These were $7.99.

I think I'm okay with the low rise. What do you think? Too juniors' on me? I have some apple tendencies but they don't create a muffin top. Hubs likes the rear view. Hopefully the looser leg fit adds a bit of bulk so I don't look like a keg on toothpicks. 9-10 are the white clams for reference. Thanks so much for your help! I can only return them for store credit, so I'll probably keep them, but I'd still like your opinion.

Claire, it is so great to see you post! And to read your post, too. Not just because you are hilarious, as always. (A keg on toothpicks, honestly!) But also because if you have been out shopping, you must be feeling better.

These look terrific!! And if you have "apple tendencies" then my aunt's my uncle.

For the price they are a steal. Wear and enjoy!

They look great Claire. I can see that they may be just a tad lower than the usual but these days I like a 7.5" to 8" at the most or I feel like they are high waisted for me. And what a great deal! If they are comfortable then I'd keep and enjoy. I sent back 2 pair of pants just today for that very reason (too high of a rise at like 8.5" or 9").

Also good to see you out shopping and posting.

Ha, right Rachylou! That's what belts are for! Actually I think they're in that sweet spot of being loose enough to be comfortable and just snug enough to stay on without a belt, which in my book is happiness! I like to be able to wear a belt if I want to, but skip it if I don't feel like messing with it.

They look great! I love your snake print sweater, too. If you can sit and they don't do the "coin slot" thing, I think you are good to go! Fab deal at $7.99.

Hi Claire! So nice to "see" you! I think the jeans look good on you - but for what its worth, I think that they are cut a little low in the back - and consequently they cut a horizontal line right through your tush. A little higher rise would give your back-end more shape! Also, do you plan to wear these with a tuck or semi-tuck? I know that for me, when I wear jeans with a lower rise, I don't like the look it creates when I tuck/semi-tuck - I feel like it makes my torso look really long, and it adds a lot of heft to the look of my waist-line! Also (ha! I'm just full of useful advice aren't I?) - the lower rise shortens the look of your legs - don't know if that matters to you or not!

Right Marley! IKWYM. I might have to save these for sweaters that I want to wear untucked. A semi tuck doesn't bother me so much, but you're right, a full tuck makes me look a bit squat, especially since I don't wear heels. I'll be curious to put these side by side with AG's I have on order. These are Hermosas, and I just went on the PacSun website to check them out. They are making their jeans with a higher rise now (and they're still way cheaper than AGs). Things that make you go, "Hmmmm." Thanks for your input!

I'll avoid giving you a hard time about the 'keg on toothpicks' cuz everyone else did already with great wit, but if I had your 'apple', I'd still be wearing low rises like that too!

They look great to me, and when you have the AGs in hand, and make a trip to PacSun, hopefully you'll feel completely confident of the winner!

Plus, that top you're wearing is awesome. I suppose that was thrifted too . . . ?

I think these look quite nice, but (ducks head) after finding a few pairs of premium denim secondhand I am a premium convert. I have nearly ordered some verrra verra expensive jeans in premium brands and you might just like the AG's that much more. With that said, I think they look good on you (no keg on toothpicks) but I cannot keep a shirt tucked to save my life in juniors brands (no to mention the plumbers crack if my cami comes untucked accidentally) so out they have all gone from my closet. I'd say you'll only know how useful they will be on these fit when moving fronts with a bit of wear and moving about in them. I have moved to mainly lower rise jeans to achieve precisely the longer torso look Marley is mentioning (why fight my natural body type?) so there is a lot of in the eye of the beholder action obviously.

Aww thanks Sara. Yes the top is a Chicos(!) sweater and I found it this past Spring at Goodwill. I just can't resist a snake print these days.

Sarah A, really good points! I am wondering if I will ever be the same after I try premium denim. Well it will have to be the "right" premium denim because I've tried some and they just weren't the right jeans for me. I told DH I'm willing to spend if the cut and comfort are that much better. I would really rather cover up an inch more of my torso if possible. I have culled all of my short tops and sweaters so that I could theoretically make this work, but another inch of coverage would make me that much more at ease and would still slice my gut (and long butt) in half....both of which I'm attempting to divide and conquer.

First of all, Claire, you look great in the jeans, so no worries there. But they are low in the front and only you can tell if they are too low--not just for fitting issues, but also your comfort level when wearing them in public.

I had a younger friend give me a pair of 7" rise jeans when she gained weight. The jeans fit, the back view was good (nothing showing when I sat down or got up), but the low front just made me feel too exposed. It's nice to get a pair of jeans for $7.99 (or free, in my case) but I sent those jeans on to a happier home with the daughter of a friend. Maybe wait until you get those AG jeans before you make your final decision.

You certainly have the body to wear them, but they would be too low for me to feel comfortable. Of course, that might be because I actually have to worry about "muffin top"! If they feel comfortable, then keep them. Just make sure that they don't create the "coin slot" and that you remain covered when you sit or crouch.

I need a magnifying glass to see your muffin top. As far as your belly--sigh. You look perfect to me. I think the jeans look nice and they look great from all views. (Just deleted what I wrote about envy.)

Aside from looks--well, looks are important--the most important question re pants is, do you feel comfortable in them?

I did mention that I think you look great in these jeans.

Ah, there is so much collective wisdom on YLF! I think I was so enamored of the tapered leg and ankle that is just right that I compromised on the rise issue. Of course it's always nice to be told that you can "get away" with something a bit young, but that doesn't mean that it's the best choice. I just wore these out to the grocery store, and I was quite conscious that there was a man standing behind me as I bent to get an item from the bottom shelf. I didn't flash him the flesh belt (I've been doing contortions in the mirror all day) but I was psychologically uncomfortable.

So with your permission, I will continue the hunt for This Year's Jeans. It might take a while, but that's half the fun. Thank you one and all!

Claire, I think you made the right choice! Of course, they look great on you, but then again, you would make a burlap bag look like a million bucks. I see no apple in you whatsoever, by the way.

Personally, I cannot abide by a short rise because of all the issues people mentioned: muffin top, difficulty tucking, potentially flashing either gut or crack (or underwear), none of which I'm comfortable with. It is nice to be able to test-drive an inexpensive pair, though, just to make sure you're not missing out on something.

AG is my favorite denim brand, because they fit me like no other jeans. Unfortunately for my wallet, no cheaper pair ever compares. I really hope they work for you! By the way, once you find a style and size that works for you, you can always get them for a lot cheaper on 6pm.com.
