New jeans?

Sorry to flood the forum recently.

Picking out shoes at an online retailer, I browsed through jeans, because my favorites have died & idk how well they can be repaired. What do you think of the following?

2-4 G-Star, Angie’s favorite brand for denim. Pinstripes could slide right into my look, but I’m afraid these are too big on top, especially as I’m at the top of my size range. I wonder if a good hard, hot kochwäsche wash could be a permanent fix.

5-7 Only. Have some stretch. I’m not sure I like the view from behind.

8-10 Carrot legs. Really questioning whether I would wear these when it’s chilly out, and how they’d work with boots with varying height shafts.

Please excuse the detritus on the porch and the fact that I apparently just rolled out of bed. (I didn’t—started writing immediately when I rolled out a couple hours ago, cause that’s how I focus best). Also, my face in #5, lol! I think I was just squinting into the sun to see the phone.

First of all, great clear photos! I like the bootcut only jeans best (5-6). But they are a somewat dated style...no? If you are looking to replace your beloved 501's you should seek out a really killer, timeless, flattering pair. I know it's out there!

I like the first and second pairs, but I do agree the first ones may be too loose at the waist.

Back view looks fine.

The carrot leg fit seems a bit wrong - I think they may be too short.

Thanks Synne! Interesting point about the 501s. Do you think they would’ve been so wearable 5 years ago, if they had fit me? My impression was that they also had a time when they were out of style.

Sal, the “floods” effect is real!

The G-stars were 24€. I’m tempted to give the 90 degree water wash a try, just wish there was a way to make them shrink in but not up. Lands End says I could dip the top in boiling water, https://www.landsend.com/article/shrink-jeans-how/ but then I’d need a way to dry them—doesn’t sound like a condensation dryer would work. Maybe I could borrow an iron or hair dryer from a neighbor.
DIYers, any advice?

I like the look of the GStar the most, even with current fit issue. I thought bootcuts were quite trendy again?

Oh I really like the bootcuts! Maybe one size up? Not sure...
I think all views are good and I like the wash.

I agree with Smittie, try the boot cuts in one size bigger. I also like the GStars.

GStars - do they have intentionally twisted seams?

I successfully shrank some of my jeans in a dryer. Couple of points: jeans should be 100% cotton and they will shrink considerably in length.
I also like bootcuts out of 3 jeans posted but you would need to size up in them.

Irina, what do you mean about twisted seams?

I’m going to ask the tailor what it would cost to take in the G-Stars.

For all of these, it has to be an up or down vote; no other sizes are available.

The sizing is frustrating. I also got some Guess jeans that are a size bigger than the G-Stars—I can’t even pull them up!

I’ve recently realized that some jeans I liked a couple years ago were G-star; wish I’d known to order them then.

I like the stripes and carrot legs... but both seem a little big, and the middle one a little odd on the backside...

I like the "carrot legs" best although I agree they seem like they might only work for warmer weather.

I'm seeing the same thing as Irina, the leg seams appear to have been deliberately skewed to create a ruched effect. It should be pretty easy to see if you lay them flat. A little ambiguous for me because it leans towards defective.
I don't think I'd rely on shrinking them.

The bootcuts in a larger size might be your most practical choice but I think you'd look great in just regular straight legs too.

I think twisted seams must be flat to look intentional and not defective. I actually have two pairs of jeans with twisted seams but mine are not wrinkled along the seams. Maybe it needs ironing.

2-4: I'd only keep these if you're comfortable with the fact that your shrinking ideas may not work. Great if you want to experiment. If you don't, or you'd be frustrated at losing money, send them back, since they look at bit large. (I don't know about dryer types and how that would affect the end product.)

5-7: Can you wear them a bit to see if they stretch a touch? They seem like they might settle into a good fit. Also, I'd try them on with shoes, to see if you still like the length. They might be a bit short, or they could be fine, but it's hard to assess in bare feet.

8-10: Fit seems off, in a way that seems to emphasize your knock knees (which I think you've mentioned might bother you, in other posts, but if I'm misremembering, please disregard) and I don't think it would be worth trying to fix, so I'd return these. If you really want carrot legs, there's probably something better out there.

Kathie, you’re a mind reader. I just dropped the pinstriped ones off at the tailor. 24€ for the pants + 8 for the alteration makes a pair of jeans that’s still quite reasonably priced. You are remembering correctly about the knock-knees, although that’s a biomechanical issue as well as an appearance one. The carrot legs aren’t anything I was going for intentionally, so I’m fine letting them go. I do hope the flares will settle into a good fit. I don’t plan to get any bigger than I am now, and actually hope to slim down a bit more over the summer. Still, I don’t know if I need two new pairs of jeans, or if I’ve already made my choice and should just live with it. Otoh, my very big wardrobe is heavily weighted to tops, and of course pants are the wardrobe item most sensitive to body changes.

Phoebe and Irene, I still can’t figure out the twisted seams thing, so I guess it’s safe to say that won’t bother me. There are darts near the knees—is it something related to them?

Rachylou, you see it too! I’m not sure if it’s a thing with the jeans or with my bottom, but somehow I’m not sure the two work together really well. I mean, if I was visiting a friend, fell in the pond, and they gave me the flares to put on, I’d be delighted with the fit.

I think what others are noticing about the seams of the pinstriped jeans is that on the lower half of the leg, the seam that one would expect to run along the outer edge of the leg comes forward and appears to run down the center of the shin. It's much more pronounced on the leg on the right side of your image.
I see it too and find jeans quite uncomfortable to wear when they do that (without being designed that way).

I like the bootcuts best too! I see no problem with the rear view. Good pocket placement and nice seat fit. But to my eye you need a longer inseam - 2 more inches, perhaps? Do try them with shoes. Do they feel too tight? Maybe try a size up.

Sarah08, you’ve enlightened me again! Yes, I think the seams do that (not sure because they are at the tailor’s) and that it is intentional. In any event, it isn’t a comfort issue or I would’ve jettisoned them already.

ETA Angie, we posted at the same time. I can’t get a different size, but am leaning towards sending the bootcuts back, along with the carrot legs. I don’t like hems that are soggy from dragging on the ground, but you know the boots I wear—this probably would be too short.

A bit late I think - but I like the G-Stars and bootcuts (as Angie says, could be a bit longer). Though sounds like you've decided on The G-Stars - good choice!

Just fyi I personally like the twisted seam look - just a little bit different.

Thanks Sloper! I did notice that the seams on the G-Stars were different from the usual straight down, and that the leg was shaped specially. For me, different is good. They were incredibly comfortable to wear; I’m looking forward to getting them back next Tuesday.

FashIntern, I may have missed it, but how are you getting the G-Stars altered? You are right about the twisted seams being intentional. Hubs Greg had a pair of those and found them comfy too.

Bootcuts look really good on you, so maybe remember that for future reference. You can sport a length that keeps them from getting soggy. Just a little longer than this style.

I saw this too late to be of any help, but thanks for showing them. I look forward to seeing the G-Stars once they are altered. That was my favorite, btw, but I admit I'm biased: I have a real soft spot for that kind of slouchy style in jeans.

Thanks Angie. Appreciate the perfect pants length advice. I’m just getting the waist taken in on the G-stars. The butt and legs seemed fine to me, but I don’t want to risk losing length by trying to shrink them in hot water.

Firecracker, nice to get the support for my choice. I will try to style a couple of outfits with them soon. My paisley blouse has blue & white ticking details—I can’t decide if that would be too cloying. I’m also tempted to pair them with a slim-fitting striped shirt. But generally I think I can almost ignore the pattern and think of them as light-colored slouchy jeans.

I like the white jeans and the bootcuts too. Yes I suppose the waist is a bit big on the white jeans....sometimes its comfy to be be roomy but not too big. I like my jeans to be firm around the bottom so think the bootcuts look great.
