Dear YLF,

I am extremely nervous about getting a new handbag. I am used to using $13 bags and $40 bags; but they do break apart fairly regularly, and although I get them on sale, so they're usually more expensive than what I get them at - I find their quality does not quite jive with the rest of my fab-ness ... so I want to take the plunge and get a nice bag I can take to work.

I have been a fan of Fossil bags for quite a while, and I am thinking of their Vintage Re-Issue Satchel (1); it's leather and a nice hand-feel plaid fabric; what do you think? It screams WINTER to me; but I hope to be able to use this for a long time ...

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Think a bag is a nice investment?

My Fossil watch has been with me for four years; so it's cost per wear is less than $10 a year (I got it at quite a discount, so I'm super happy with that); and only needed a new battery! My Fossil boots have been with me for two years and may need new soles, but aside from that, are pretty awesome!

You can tell the quality even in a photo. You would keep a bag like this forever, well, I would. The leather looks so soft and strong. Sweet little shoes too. They remind me of suffragettes.

Love the bag and say go for it. It's such a rich, deep color and if everyone vouches for its quality, it will be worth it.

I bought a purple Fossil crossbody last year and love it. Granted, I don't carry it that often in my home-centric life right now, but I'm sure it will wear wonderfully over the years.
I'd go for it!

The leather looks premium! You are winter dominant so as long as you like the colors and don't mind mixing your patterns with it, I say BUY! Especially if you have fallen in LOVE. That's the best sign of a great bag. Can you visit it somewhere before you commit of do you have to order it to see it IRL?

I have the same Fossil vintage re-issue satchel in floral velvet. It is my #1 favorite bag and I carry it nearly every day! Fossil quality is excellent. My other main bag (red executive tote) is Fossil too and I've had it for years and it's held up really well. And I am hard on my bags...dragging them everywhere, around the ward etc. You will not regret getting a Fossil bag. And the pattern on that one is so cool. I too was afraid of buying a patterned bag because I was worried about it clashing with my other prints, but I love the colors and it just seems to go with everything I wear. It automatically bumps me up into "advanced pattern mixing" territory, LOL!
You MUST get this bag!

Lyn, I just noticed the shoes. Are those Naya Jada pumps? We have really similar taste, LOL! I tried that exact pair on a couple months ago. Unfortunately it just didn't look right on my feet. I don't know what it was, the ribbons and open vamp or something, but it looked way cuter in the pic than on my feet. You could probably pull it off though!

Thanks very much ladies; I recently have acquired another fossil bag for the wards (needed something light and cross-body, but big enough for my iPad) ... the Modern Cargo fold-over version.

Goldenpig - I adore the velvet flower version; but I can't get it because my attending has that bag! LOL; she's an awesome awesome lady (with impeccable taste), but I don't think I should have the same one. LOL. I'm proud to be style twins with you You have a great eye - I also tried on the shoes in store, but the vamp is wrong for me, and the ribbon closure doesn't provide me with enough support.

Claire - I visit this bag EVERY time we go to the store that carries them. I may have hugged it once or twice. My sister rolls her eyes.

I most definitely count bags as investment pieces - and I don't say that about just anything. Once I finally bought a good bag, I wondered how I ever used to stand it when a beloved-yet-inexpensive bag started to peel and unravel.

The only queston in my mind about this particular Fossil bag is the textile portion - ONLY because it seems like you want it to be your everyday workhorse for several years. I haven't had a textile bag, but it seems like it'd wear out faster than all leather.

Lyn, I am a huge fan of Fossil bags. I own several and they have held up well with daily use over several years. I was recently bag shopping and ended up with a different brand, but I have second-guessed myself repeatedly because I love Fossils so much. (They just didn't have the RED I wanted!)

I think your bag is gorgeous but I second rae's concerns about the durability of the fabric portion. Is it intended to be your daily bag?

I use mine nearly every day and so far it's held up well. It's lined and the fabric is very durable. It cost $188 but I've already got it down to $3/wear or less in the last three months that I've owned it. And my other red Fossil leather tote is down to pennies by this point--I've had it for years.

Lyn, I wouldn't worry that your attending has the same bag (but agree she has good taste ;-)). How long are you going to be with her? One or two months? A blip in the life of this bag. Get the one that makes you happy. The plaid is certainly cheery and fun--wearable with lots of different colors. However, I am bummed--just found out that the one I have isn't being sold anymore! They replaced it with another floral one but the colors are quite garish--magenta & chartreuse etc. Yuck! I hope mine lasts forever because now I can't get a replacement! This other new red diamond pattern looked cool though! But if I had to pick another I'd go for the plaid.

I KNOW! I can't find your bag on ebay either; the only ones I can find ship only to the USA so it's like GAHhHHHHHHHHH!! *rip hair out*

I'm with her for a month; but hope to be in the faculty; but I guess I won't' be working directly with her - the other residents all carry arm candy bags - there is one girl who I swear has a Hermes. I've been trying to sit next to her in Grand Rounds so I can see if it is or not. Unfortunately, she tends to sit with the other residents so it's like Bummer!

There is an all-leather version at the Bay for $228; the cross-body I bought was about $140 at half price; so ugh. I may check the other Sears stores to see if they have anymore Fossil bags - they had them on boxing day for 40% off; and of course, I didn't walk through on that PARTICULAR DAY because Fossil NEVER goes on sale (you know). Ugh.

I love love love your bag

My last leather bag was $13 and I wore it almost every day for 6 months. 7 cents a wear. It's strap is falling off though; poor little thing. I still use it (like yesterday); and hope no one notices the unravelling strap

ETA: I've also seen the following designs; the $228 in store is #3.

Now you have me drooling over that stripey one...

How do you feel about having to open that turnlock closure all the time? The plaid one you originally posted is a zip closure, which is more convenient to me. Do these last three have a zip as well as the turnlock?

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions here - bags are serious business for me.

Thanks for asking the important questions, Rae; I usually like the zipper tops; the "weekender" model has the turn lock and the "satchel" one has the zipper. I am currently using a turn lock and it's not as annoying as I thought it would be!

Lyn, I say pick a pattern. (I still vote for the plaid). The all-leather one is nice, but I think the fabric is what gives the bag its specialness.

Rae, mine is a zip top satchel but I can still fit my Macbook Air laptop in there. I think the weekender is bigger.

Y'know, since you'll be switching off with your foldover crossbody, I think I'm retracting my reservations about the textile panels. You love that version; you've loved it for a good long while; it'll get switched out; Natalie has endorsed its durability; and the all-leather one looks too much like the crossbody. Heck, if the fabric panels fall apart in a couple years, it doesn't even look like it'd be too hard to have someone sew in some replacement fabric...

Goldenpig - you bring up a good point, I have a 15" MacBook Pro and I want it to fit! I may have to fit test it!

That would be a fun idea--bag with interchangeable panels so you can switch them out for different moods and to match different outfits!

Lyn, if you want a 15" computer to fit you may have to go with the larger size bag. I think my Macbook Air is 13 inches and it just fits into the satchel and I don't use a case (though I should).

Ah! I do wonder if it's important enough to bring my Macbook with me to different places; I take the iPad usually these days.
