New Haircut: what I wanted vs what they gave me

1- What I had in mind
2- What I actually got (when checking photos earlier, I literally thought 'not like in this picture')

I also got bangs because my face looks better with them. But they are not what I wanted either. It's not the stylist fault, I think I just didn't know how to phrase my ideas properly. Next time I'm bringing a photo! I did explicitly say front hair should hit BELOW my chin and fringe should be sided. My fringe is straight.

Photos tomorrow!

PS: I still like the cut, but it's such a different vibe from what I was going for... shame!

Sometimes a dramatic change is hard to take in all at once. Gie it a day or two and then see what you think. In the meantime, looking forward to the pics!

Urgh. I hate it when that happens. My recent haircut was a case in point -- it ended up several inches shorter than what I asked for! But it was nonetheless flattering, and after a few days of messing around I figured out how to style it so that I did not look like a local TV news presenter circa 1987.

I'm sure yours will be fine!

Ugh, I hate it when I have communication breakdown with a stylist. I have to bring along a picture to have a prayer of explaining what I want. Let us see a photo!

Yes, a new cut can be a bit offputting! The saving grace is that it's hair and it will grow out Can't wait to see pics.

Edited w/ photo! I think i like it even less today!! Man, iloolk a news presenter from the 80s... seriously considering going for a more modern shorter style. Problem is, im not ready for the growing it out part!

I also battle to express myself at the hairdresser. Mostly I take in my iPad with all the hair pics I have pinned and show them to her to discuss.

Having said that though, I once took in a pic and came out with exactly what the pic was - and hated it! It was an assymetrical look with longer wispy bits on one side than the other. I somehow did not notice that in the pic. I came home, tried to live with it and eventually lopped off the mismatched wispy bits myself! Note to self to look at pictures more carefully!

Oh and I think your new hair is lovely btw! Even if it is not what you had in mind!

Well I think your new do is really quite funky. Give it a few weeks and you will get some length and it will be what you wanted in no time:)

First up, I think your new hairstyle looks quite lovely! Whenever something like this happens to me, I remind myself that the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is around two weeks!

First off, I think the style looks cute on you! And as KatiePea says, it will grow out quickly, too.

But I COMPLETELY understand your frustration, and then some. This was my situation in my twenties, exactly. I always wanted one kind of current bob...and always ended up getting a shorter cut with bangs that I felt made me look like Frankenstein's monster. Eventually I went back to shorter because it just worked better on me!

Girls, I hate it more and more as the day goes on. Seriously, I've never felt like this before! I'm SO mad. It wasn't even my mistake. The hair hitting at my mouth only accentuates the fact that my lips look awful and I have braces on -and the slight bulge that comes with them. Which is why I asked for the front bangs to hit BELOW my chin. Ugh.

To top it off -and one of my colleagues agrees- I look like ten years older.

Funny how that photo angle is supposed to make it look better. And it does, but I hate it even there so I don't want to think what it would look like from the front...

Like doulahill, I've also brought in a photo and still not been entirely happy. I think my hairdresser and I noticed different things about the cut... me the pieces in front, he noticed the structure around the ear, which he had doubts about (and he was right, I didn't love the way it grew out, which doesn't take long at my length). They are looking at it differently than we do because of their training I guess. It sometimes feel like we don't speak the same language.
With your first photo, it looks very "grown out" already. Like even if the stylist gave you that exact cut, it wouldn't look good in about 2 weeks, IYKWIM. However they definitely missed the mark on your very specific length preference. Is it time for a new stylist?
When it grows out a bit, the big difference between the two Keira looks you posted that *I* notice is that you want it much longer in front than on the sides/back. The second pic is very one-length all around, it seems that is NOT the look you want so maybe start with that.
You do have the features for a great pixie... Anne Hathaway-esque?

I like it a lot! You look spunky. The bangs are really attractive on your face too.

Even with a good stylist, my hair never quite turns out like the inspiration pictures I bring in. My hair has a mind of it's own.

Jules, I would love to have a pixie but I've been there and I know how hard it is to grow it out. I'm not sure I'm ready for that!!!!

Thank you all for your encouragement. Other people have told me it looks ok too (no one lied about it being great though). It doesn't change the fact that I still don't like it (wouldn't like it on anyone my age and with my type of hair) and that I'm pissed off because I actually paid for this (isn't that funny?). I think I'll try to use some products to give it a wavy texture or something. I don't know, I hate the fact that it's so classic, I wanted something young, edgy, cool and sexy. This has nothing to do with that at all.

Older? You look way young to me. I like the cut in the picture. I'm thinking you need a large round brush and your hair dryer to do Keira. I'm not a product maven, so I don't know what would be the right product for that style.

Irene, I understand your frustration! Besides the difference in length- and that part won't take too long to remedy- what is striking to me is that the hair in the first photo looks more rough while yours looks sleek and shiny. Also, the first is more straight while yours has a bit of wave in the bangs and the ends are turning under a bit.

Which gives yours a more cute look rather than edgy. It does look nice, but it was not what you wanted.

I think products can make a BIG difference in changing how yours looks. Two things you might want to try- one is a pomade from Got 2B called "Dirt". It allows you to get a more piecy look. The other thing that gives similar results is a light powder that you rub between your hands and then rub in at the roots and on the ends. There is one for volume and one for texture but I've gotten similar results from both. Also from Got 2B and called "Powderful" It's available at drugstores (in the states)

Rachy, yes, I do look older. It's the angle of the photo (it's a bad angle to actually appreciate the haircut, but I couldn't deal with how bad it looked from the front!!!). Also, today I was wearing this knitted dress by Mango, which is kind of 'smart' and it made me look even older. I'm used to looking younger than what I am, so for me it feels weird. I guess I'm back to tees+jeans+messy hair for some weeks!

PS: I dry mi hair with a round brush already, but I think I'll try some other technique so that it doesn't look so perfectly ladylike

Susie, I don't live in the States (I live in Barcelona :P) but I'll go to the drugstore to check what I can get. I have tried some pomade, and also some 'waving' spray. It does help!

One correction- the one product I mentioned is actually called texture dirt and it's by FX. Thought I imagine you have totally different things!

It's an interesting styling challenge to me, Irene. (Btw, I *am* sorry you hate the cut!) Did the stylist take the razor to your hair at all? The cut needs choppy pieces for texture, I'm guessing. But I'm thinking one thing is that it needs to be less curled under at the ends. It has a Dorothy Hamil curl under now. Maybe for at-home styling, a not-round brush might actually be better to achieve that.
