New dress: with obi belt I made, or not?

I did a little bit of shopping yesterday and I bought this dress in the link

It's difficult to see the detail so I've included pics of it flat on my bed. It has a very Japanese feel to it with the wider sleeves and print in the fabric. I made the obi belt a few years back. It's made of vintage fabric that I had collected. I've worn it a few times with plain black maxi dresses, but not for some time now. It is challenging with my short waist....and although I'm in denial (lol), it might sit even higher now because my waist is a little bigger (50s body changes, ack)

Anyway, I thought that it might suit this dress. At a pinch, I could move the velcro so that it sits a tad lower. I have shown it with and without. Hair is yucky from dance class this morning.

Wow, what a cool belt! I love that you made it from fabric you have collected... It is gorgeous! The dress is wonderful too - so many great lines and details. I actually like it both ways - they each have a different feel. With the belt seems a bit more whimsical and casual. And without seems dressier, simple and chic. So great!

I agree with Sarah--both ways look great, they just have a different feel. I guess in general I would opt for the obi during daytime and no obi for evening or night.

I am short waisted too, and I don't think that the position of the belt looks awkward. I am leaning more and more toward emphasizing my short waist these days instead of camouflaging it. It seems like short waists are in now, with all of the high-waisted stuff.

I have a tough time with belts, so naturally prefer the dress without the belt. But the belt has lovely sentimental value, and I think it works. It's very much the focal point, and I'm impressed that you made it.

I think you carry this off beautifully--either way. The belt is a stunning art-piece, and the dress has a wonderful shape. I love how it draws attention to your beautiful neck.

Thank you ladies. I feel that the dress has an almost 50s 'new look' feel to it without the belt (I only really saw that when I looked at my own pics!), so I might style it that way when I don't wear the belt.

You have given me confidence to wear the belt. Thank you. I'm always a little hesitant about something that I have made myself.

I like the dress both with and without the belt.

With the belt, I want to see you pick out one of those bright colors and use it for the color of your shoes, or earrings, or a bracelet!

Both looks are super, that dress looks like it would be pretty versatile. I like Jeweled's suggestion to have bright accessories to match the belt.

Beautiful belt -- and how clever of you to make it.

I like the dress both ways. I slightly prefer it without because the geometry stands out that way. And I think I'd like the belt even more with a longer skirt (i.e. your maxi looks). But it definitely works with it here, also, for a more casual, whimsical look, as Sarah said.

Look at you! I love it (and your dance hair, too!). What a pretty dress and the lines and hem are stunning. Your obi belt adds beautiful interest and I do agree that it may work best with a longer hemline, but it looks fine here, too.

The belt is beautiful, and I would move the velcro to help it sit slightly lower.

Thanks again ladies. I'm looking forward to wearing it now! It's just been a bit too cold lately. Vicky, I think I will move the velcro a bit too. I must face the inevitable about my disappearing waist (sob).

Both ways is great.. Really neat that you made the belt.
I do love the dress. My favourite way is solo. Sometimes less is more. Wearing just the dress will make you the star.
