New dress - keep or return? - YouLookFab Forum

I bought this dress today because I liked the color and pattern, but I'm still a little undecided about the fit. It was drastically on sale, so I thought I would take it home with me and have you all take a look. I'm wearing this with a slip dress underneath, which was included with the dress.

#1 That's how it looks when I don't change anything. I think it looks a little boring.

#2 Not cinched in with the string from the dress, but belted. You can see that the upper part of the dress is a little too big.

#3 With the collar turned down.

#4 With the sleeves rolled up. That's the look I like most.

#5 That's closer to the real color. You can see again that there's too much room at the sides. That's a problem I have almost everytime with dresses, because of my small bust.

Should I keep it? Or return it, since it doesn't fit 100% right?

It looks a little shapeless on the bottom to me. Almost like a tunic top that's a few inches too long if that makes sense. I'd keep looking for a better fit.

I like it. But you definitely MUST belt it; a variety of belts would work.

There is just one concern I have -- the front seems to be longer than the sides (or is that an illusion). The unevenness of the hem puts the dress a little into flimsy or cheapy territory. If you can adjust it so it hangs properly (pressing?) then I would keep it. If this can't be corrected, you might want to return it.

Mo, you are right, although I would have thought the top half to be more problematic.

CocoLion, you're right that I would have to belt it. I don't know about the hem, but if I look in the mirror, the hem looks even.

Then it's probably just the camera angle. I say keep then!

I love the color and pattern of this dress, and, like you, prefer it belted with the sleeves rolled up (4). I think it's really cute on you, and I can see it working as a great layering dress this winter. If it was really on sale, and it's comfy, and you feel good in it, I say keep!

It looks better belted, but the hemline isn't very flattering. Also, I think this dress looks a bit dated on you instead of fresh and current. I'm a huge fan of vintage inspired fashion, but this dress has a bit of a wayward 80s vibe going on. Forgive me for being so blunt. :o)

I agree with LovesMoose. Is it possible to have it hemmed and/or tailored? The fabric is lovely!

Thanks for your votes! I think I'm going to return the dress. While I like the pattern and the color, the cut and the fit aren't perfect (what I already knew a little bit) so I will pass.

Jonesy, it really was on sale and relatively inexpensive, but money is money and that's a little I can then spend on other things. Your're right that I could layer it now with the cold temperatures, but I actually would need some spring items (which I didn't found) more. I think I also bought it because I saw so many nice things on sale and nothing I tried on did even remotely fit. I really would like to wear more dresses, but I never find ones that fit me.

I think you're right and the cut looks a bit like some of the items I purged from my closet some time ago. It's the force of habit, I guess. I'm just not all that brave yet when it comes to shopping clothes.

Una, I don't think it's worth the effort of hemming and tailoring, although I like the fabric, too.

Thank you all for giving me some perspective! It's difficult for me to buy things without an outside opinion and I don't really have someone to shop with.

I vote return. Too plain and ordinary.

Also, in your own words - it doesn't fit 100% right. That in itself is a reason to part with it.
