New Cons? Yay or Nay? - YouLookFab Forum

I love black Converse low tops and have had a pair in my closet since high school. That means *ahem* quite a few years, quite a few pairs. They are actually the only athletic sneaks I have, other than a pair of old running shoes from several years ago before I decided running was too hard on my knees. (Goofy, but I keep them just in case I have some emergency reason that I really need running shoes. You know, like I decide to rent a cabin in the woods all for myself and drive up there in my 1973 Olds Delta 88 and find a cool book bound in human skin that I decide to read aloud from and then I hear this weird scratching under the floorboards and I get scared but there isn't a chainsaw handy and I haven't shopped smart at S-Mart....) But back to my quandary...I currently have an older pair of black Cons. They aren't quite old enough to justify getting rid of as worn out. They look not-new, but not dead yet.

I was on Zappos a while ago and got tempted to buy a pair of black low top Cons in leather. I've always had canvas and though the leather may wear better and be more comfortable. The leather is nice, but it is lined in canvas. So, other then the outside being potentially spiffier for longer, I don't see much benefit. I'm torn now whether I should keep or return. Unlike many of my keep/returns, where I have an idea which direction I'm leaning, I have no idea what to do this time. They were about $50, so not a big investment for me and I can keep or return with impunity.

What do you think I should do?

Well I love the look of the leather. There is something about the leather that reads "cool" and "dressy" to me. I think it is a more styleised look. I am biased because I have a pair (not cons though) but I am not a big sneaker wearer so not sure Im qualified to advise here. Why don't you post an outfit with them for us.

D. I'm not sure I have any outfit photos for them! They are my go to sneaker, but I don't wear sneakers all that often. I think of them as equivalent to black flats or even a basic tee. I don't wear them continually, but they are a background item that I always have in my closet. I wear them with shorts, with jeans, with dresses (for a tomboy sort of look).

In that case I think they would be great. Just a nice cut above the regular canvas. I would buy them.

Mmmm -- IDK. My bias against a pair in leather is whether or not it is constructed differently. I see no reason to invest (unless they're cute and comfy) in another pair just because they're leather. I also saw a pair in Mint Green when I was in the store the other day (LOVELY!) but I tend to avoid canvas sneakers because they don't support my high arches.

Well, since your canvas pair will need to be replaced at some point....... I'm not very familiar with how to wear the canvas Cons - would leather carry you more into fall than canvas?

Well I just bought the Josef Siebel Caspians, which are leather sneakers, and I love them. So I say yay. I think leather sneakers look kinda cool and edgy, and I like that.

Pil, that's a good point that I hadn't thought of! The leather could be waterproofed, making them much better for rainy, puddley Portland weather. The canvas works okay because the sole is so deep, but treated leather would definitely be better!

I decided to stop buying non leather cons. My shoes need to withstand rain. I vote leather.

First of all, your story is hilarious! It's even better than pictures, IMHO! I find my Cons get pretty trashed and need replacing unless I'm just wearing them to wash the car. I love the idea of leather and think they would elevate a casual outfit. My next pair is going to be leather.

I love my black canvas Cons. Having the same thing in leather sounds fab! I bought the Caspians, too, and I like them OK, but they just don't speak to me the same way. Go for it!
