I don't think this problem is going away anytime soon. You know how established a pattern is when you see the websites advertising the cards' information for sale. Bold as heck. I almost never shop at Target (not convenient), but of course, was helping DD move to her new apt. during the critical period and had to replace two different cards after purchasing household items there.
I am using cash a lot more since we have had several cases of fraudulent charges showing up on our cards after using them in particular places (not Target). In each case, our bank identified the suspicious activity and contacted us immediately. Law enforcement told us to avoid debit card use except for at known bank ATMs as the credit cards offer a buffer between thieves and your account. I am also using my credit card with a chip in it more than those without, for a tiny bit of security.
