Beth, I fear this *could* go either way (indeed, have therefore refrained from voting).
Like MaryK and Sarah, I think this bag may head towards tooo mousy if you don't dress it up with more excitement elsewhere in your outfit. I completely understand what you're saying about versatility --- I too have had precisely 4 handbags, of which one if impractical for travelling and another is a pain to keep clean --- for the last 3 years! But for the reason above, I think this bag may actually prove LESS versatile than something that includes a bit more textural interest or a sharper structure.
For instance, even with this specific bag, I suspect eschewing the stone and black and going with the tan or taupe might make it automatically a little more up-to-date --- just because you are avoiding the 'default' colours (which always seem dated faster, unless there is a little interest to it). Especially as stone will show wear quite fast and black tends to often hide a patina. Think of it, as a comparison, as a plain white button-down shirt --- can get boring really terribly fast unless (a) well accessorized (b) great design and/or detailing (c) luxurious or funky fabrication. See what I'm getting at?
OTOH, if you *always* add excitement to your outfit in other ways anyway --- patterned or coloured or textured shoes, scarves, tops, jewellery, or whatever floats your boat --- you could very well go with this and still look up-to-date. Sum of the parts...!
