Need to replace a boot...

In my recent shoe edit, I purged several pairs of boots and now realize I have a hole in my wardrobe. I worry that I’m looking for a unicorn...

What I have in mind is a brown or cognac lace-up combat or hiking type boot (like Timberland), short shaft, low heel, without zippers and has bonus points for being waterproof.

Does anyone know if this unicorn boot exists? I’ve looked at kamik, sorel, Frye and not finding it.

You should definitely look at Timberland. I have a few pairs and I love them. Be sure they say waterproof. Don’t assume. Zappos is nice for free and fast shipping, but Timberland has a really good selection on their website, and they are very clear about which are waterproof.

The one on the left is the classic 6 inch boot, and other two are Nellie Chukka. The tan pair I wear only birding because they’re kind of beat up.

I just today received the Timberland Jaynes kkards posted in burgundy. I think they are tough-but-pretty rather than gearish. Ordered mostly for urban running around the neighbourhood - I wanted something 3 season that can handle looking a bit beat up from daily wear, so I can keep my dressier footwear more pristine. But they will come in handy for the odd muddy hike too.

Thanks Jules! I am also looking for a 3 season urban running around boot, and ordered the Jaynes this morning and also a similar one by A company called Cougar. They look almost identical; the Cougar is lightly insulated.

Omg how do I always forget about Canadian brand Cougar??? Long before I ever heard of Timberlands, in the early 80s I was the only kid in grade 3 (Canadian for 3rd grade!) who didn’t have Cougar construction style boots with red laces. I distinctly remember the line up of boots outside my class signalling all the ways I was out of it...
And somehow American Timberlands are now the trend (my 12 yo DD has the original style). This happens all the time in Canada. I used to like the Canadian coffee chain Second Cup, which we had years before we had Starbucks or tons of independent cafes. Their sweet dessert coffees are to my sweetness level, when I want that kind of thing. Then Starbucks came and I spent years trying to figure out which sweet coffees and shakes I enjoy. They are mostly way too sweet for me. Finally went back to Second Cup and lo and behold that’s what I wanted all along...

Jules - I had never heard of Cougar until I started digging around online a couple of days ago. I was drawn in by the insulation, although I have an amazing snow boot already.

I wonder about the quality of Cougar (the 6mo warranty has me a bit concerned), as I run my shoes -- esp boots -- into the ground. My Frye's have been re-soled at least five or six times in the 10+ years I've had them... I am not that familiar with Timberland either, I just remember my dad owning a pair of the original yellow ones in the early 80s. Doc Martins were what the cool kids wore when I was in school, but they were too heavy/clunky for me (and I wasn't that cool!).

This idea of a fashionable gear-ish boot is intriguing to me. I've always leaned either way fashion or way gear. What do you think of the Timberlands?

I really like them but haven’t tried them with outfits yet.
I wore docs for years but don’t feel I can quite pull them off now, so the Timberlands are an attempt to get the same casual, practical and ‘stompy’ effect. I already have snow boots that are great but too warm once it gets above freezing.
I can’t comment on Cougar’s quality these days, but they were solid back when that was more the default expectation

Last fall, I got these burgundy lace-ups, sort of a refined combat style, from Thursday Boot Company. Quality is really good for the price, and they have some nice brown/tan/cognac colours:

Like you, I really wanted one without a side zipper, which limits the options quite a bit!

ETA: They're not waterproof but I treat them with a leather protector annually and they seem to hold up fine through average puddles and slush.

I have picky feet -- don't like anything too stiff, heavy, tight, or pinchy in the toes -- and I can wear these all day! I've been using the Doc Martens brand leather protector. I think it's called Wonder Balsam?

My Timberland Jaynes are keepers - great fit, very comfortable, supportive/sturdy for my weak ankles, cute with skinny jeans.
I’d totally order the Thursday boots in cognac too, if they were available in Canada
