Need suggestions: for sleep/lounge mom.....

My mother is moving to an independent living condo with her dog and will desperately need some kind of lounge/sleepwear that is respectable to walk the corridors and outside for a quick puppy potty trip. Mom is very petite just 5', so regular sizing will be way too long in a pant. A regular capri might fit. Mom will only wear a loose pant - no leggings or banded sweatpants. My mother takes a PL in JJill which is her preferred brand. Unfortunately, JJill is stripped out of sizing at the moment. Also the tops must be loose with easy on and off because she has shoulder, well total mobility issues. Lastly, she needs a hoodie or cardigan she can throw over the top. I appeal to the wisdom of the hive mind - does anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting desperate!

LL Bean has some comfy bottoms (ultrasoft, straight leg) and they come in petite.

I was also going to recommend LL Bean!
For the topper, I would specifically recommend this fleece jacket. I own it and have been living it in as loungewear. It is seriously the softest and snuggliest thing ever and very warm. Everyone I know who owns this (of all ages) loves it. It also comes in a pullover version and a vest version, but I think the jacket version is probably best for warmth and ease of taking on/off.

Nemosmom & Diana - thank you both so very much. My sister has been handling the move. I had volunteered months ago on this when JJill had sizing. Now at the 11th hr, she dumps this on me! I so appreciate you suggestions. I am off to LL Bean right now! Thanks again

ETA - so close the soft knit set looked good but the pants are too narrow. She needs a loose fit pant. So sad.

Does it have to be pants? The first 3 finds are what I have on right now. The dress is not sold as a nightgown, but is very soft, so would be comfortable to sleep in. Leggings are leggings--modesty and warmth. The jacket is perfect because the sleeves don't catch on anything, and it treads the border between "sloppy" and "loose & easy" perfectly. These exact pieces probably won't be available any more, but I thought they might give a useful idea.

Idk where she is/if it's cold there, but 1.5 years ago, there were a ton of loungewear pieces like this jacket available.

The kimono is just a suggestion of getting something light to toss over when she goes out with the pup.

For the cardigan I really like this one from Athleta and have it in two colors:

Washes well! Soft and cozy! I never want to take it off. And yes petite sizing. You might try Athleta also for petite pants.

Lou & Grey is another recommendation.

Never bought anything there but what about Soft Surroundings? I think everything is supposed to be soft.

Also just in general you can buy an ankle length sleep pant and it'll probably be close to full length, or at least not a trippable length.

I am 5'0 and just refreshed my PJ capsule. I went with Victoria Secret PJs in the cotton in the short length. They are a bit on the long side however.

I ordered some things for my Mom a couple of years ago from Buck and Buck - they worked well for her. They are made for seniors and are easy on and off. Soft fabrics. There are other companies that make clothing for seniors as well but I am not familiar with them.

Remember - pants are easily hemmed by the dry cleaner or tailor.

Fashintern - thank you so much for all you suggestions. I just spoke with mom. It gets even more difficult. Yes it must be pants - pull on and loose. Pulling something over her head is difficult. Long sleeve, buttons or zips, warm but very light. I have a headache....

I’ll look for tops in the morning (though how can she sleep with buttons or a zipper down her front?) but i hope the pants will help.

Look at Buck and Buck - they have sleepware that snaps at the shoulder so you can slip it on without going over the head.

Also look for “Adaptive Clothing” that might yield something as well.

Just a few thoughts I learned when dealing with this with my mom...a zip front robe is the best style rather than a wrap. Must have pockets. Machine wash and dryable is a must. Do not spend much. Anything she owns may get lost or taken. Dark colors or prints are best as they do not obviously show accidents and spills. Error on the side of too large. What does she like about JJill? Knowing may help you.
If she has cataracts, get brighter colors. She is looking through orangey mustard colored lenses.
If she has shoulder problems, she may not be able to raise her arms without pain. Pullovers may be difficult to put on. If she has arthritis in her hands, buttons and small fasteners are out.
I second LL Bean or Lands End or Eddie Bauer. Fleece zip or half zip tops may work well.. My mother loved blouses with gathering across a back seam because she felt that they camouflaged her back that had become somewhat humped. Her favorite neutral was a medium grey. She would never wear a jogging suit or denim. It says something about the person to that era. Shoes are important.must be slip on with a grippy bottom. The Velcro fasteners work well for a narrow foot to keep them on.
She should have a coat in her closet. Just having it seems to be a comfort. Of course it will get use if she takes the dog out. She will need gloves and hat and scarf too, maybe boots. Wishing you much success.

My mom’s 5’ and really likes Land’s End and LL Bean. I also personally like the Carol Wright catalog, ‘cuz I like an old-fashioned house dress, lol. But they have other things like this lounge outfit:

Gryffin, I was looking for warm clothing - unsuccessfully - for my mother not long ago. She lives in memory care so anything different than what she already had was a no go.
I did run across this polo shirt and put one in her closet. Not warm, but easy to get on and no buttons for her arthritic fingers and diminished cognitive skills. She wore it for the first time yesterday, but that is because I happened to be there to help her get dressed.

The website said to order a size larger, but her usual size was good. Roomy but not sloppy. She is about 5’ 2” and it was a little long on her.

Pockets are important for my mom - she always has a tissue!

If your mom isn’t doing her own laundry, labeling everything is a good idea. Mom was wearing some else’s nightgown the other day.

Gryffin, no suggestions I'm afraid, my mom also struggles to find things she's comfortable in, that aren't too slim, etc. She's had luck at Reitmans in Canada (not expensive but decent quality wise) but that's more yoga gear than proper sleepwear.

As Runcarla mentioned, the Lands End starfish pants might be perfect for her. I bought the slim fit ones below for travel, but they are so comfortable, I wear them for loungewear.

Good luck with the shopping and the move. Big changes and they make take some time to adjust to.
Land’s End and LLBean have some great options and offer petite sizes. If warm enough, some comfy pull on capris in solid colors might work well for the lounging and the quick doggie duty trips. Also a pair of slip on outdoor shoes that have a good tread will make it easier for her to get out the door with doggie.

Kkards - thanks for the link. It's a tough line, she wants things that don't look like PJ's but feel like PJ's on. Plus then nothing that goes over her head. So tough. But the pants look good thanks!
Joy - zip front robes are good, just not for this task. She like JJill because the clothes fit. About 20 yr ago, plus size clothing was all about the velour tracksuit - the dressy ones. That's what she likes and JJill like EF carries the loose, clean, comfortable clothing that she prefers, EF is too spendy. Now she's lose more than 50 lb since dad died and she has a new wardrobe, but honestly she wants what she used to have and they don't make exact iterations any more. Lauren used to have a great selection and Clairbourne.
Rachy - no house dresses because she won't wear stocking, can't manage a heel and won't show her legs. It's pants or bust. I will check out carol wright, thanks!
pil - thank you, I will check them out. Mom is going to independent living. So she will have a full condo and have someone come in to clean and do her laundry. She wants to be a princess and the place has every amenity available to allow this wish to be possible.

Mainelady - Oy please don't get me started on shoes!! I can't find mom a slipper. She has a corn on the tip of her second toe and refuses to all the podiatrist to see her. Then it's impossible to find a shoe that is comfortable. So difficult! Thanks for the suggestions!

At least in nursing homes, not sure about other care levels, they bring clothes in. I definitely saw velour tracksuits in their lots (though that was about 10 years ago). Truthfully what they bring is very generic and not so nice though! Columbia has a lot of nice soft fleece jackets in happy colors-would she wear that?

Your mom sounds like mine and I have a lot of experience in this area. I've been my moms care-giver for many years from independent living, assisted living and nursing home.
My mom loves jeans and pants with elastic waists because they are easy to get on and off and for bathroom use. I've found Walmart to be a great resource for these kind of pants in soft materials as well as inexpensive. Mom is very hard on her clothes due to limited mobility as well as spills and such so her clothing gets washed alot.
My moms vision is not good so I've found patterned tops work best in concealing little stains she may not notice.
Old Navy can be a good resource especially for hoodies.
I've found it a lot easier to find zipper hoodies in an assortment of colors and soft cozy materials an easy item my mom can throw on over whatever she's wearing. Their a great cover-up for any age person and she can walk her dog or just lounge around and feel covered.
Make sure her name is in all her clothing, it's amazing how things get lost, including her glasses if she wears them.
Purchase wash and wear, no dry-cleaning.
Clothing shopping is always a hit or miss for everyone but I do stop by stores like Kohl's, Target, H&M, Gap and Walmart of course. I keep an eye out for fashion my mom will like but also make sure it's washable and inexpensive so neither of us has to worry about lost or damaged items.

My 94 YO mother lives in a retirement home (not assisted living). At her place they’re not allowed to wear sleepwear in the public spaces. Have you looked into that?

My mom is all about the comfort too, and frequently goes straight from bed to the dog park. Have you looked at any of the Zella pants? They make some straight leg joggers that just have a drawstring. Comfy enough to sleep in, but still pants.
