Need some help paring down the scarf collection

Manders post made me tackle my scarf collection - I've been sorting through other stuff and this is a good moment to purge some of my scarves. I've been relying a lot on scarves to make an outfit in the past, but lately I've been wearing four or five different ones and the others get neglected. I think my style is changing a bit and I feel that I should let some scarves go on my quest for a smaller wardrobe. The pictures below are all scarves I haven't worn a lot lately or at all. I have some already in the purge pile and some I'm definitely keeping that are not included here.

Help me decide what to keep?

I've decided to keep #5/6/7/9/14. And I'm going to keep #12 and ask my sister if she wants to have it, it's silk and should work better for her.

Are any of them scratchy or uncomfortable to wear but you love the way they look? I'd add any of those pictured above to a purge pile if you find them uncomfortable in any way.

Good luck making the choices! I have waaaaay too many scarves but I do wear most all of them all the time because I'm often cold and they are critical in helping me feel warmer throughout the day.

No, they are all comfortable to wear. It would be easier if they weren't! I also like wearing scarves and wear one on most days in fall/winter/early spring, but I have way too many anyway.

I noticed that many of them are in the same colour families but not 11, 13, and 14. Without looking at photos of you, I'm going to guess that they might not be your best colours? Just because they don't seem to match the rest of your collection. So obviously I'd say edit by colours. The ones that don't flow with the rest of your closet get rid of, PLUS you also have more than one scarf with similar colours (4&12; 2&5) so maybe group them by colour and then only keep 1 from each group. 1 dark red, 1 light blue, etc...

Oh and yes, also decide by quality of the fabric, if it's comfortable and if it will last a long time.

Astrid, I recently purged a bunch of scarves using 2 basic criteria:
1) Does the color/pattern flatter my coloring? (we wear scarves close to our faces, so it's important that they flatter….more so than other pieces of clothing)
2) Is the fabric comfortable and easy to manipulate? (if the fabric is difficult to manage or uncomfortable it won't make you happy and will probably just sit in the closet unworn).

Well, I may not be any help. I love these: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 14. I'm coveting 3, 7, 8 and 11!

I'm not crazy about 1 & 2. Both look a little dated to me.

5, 8, 9, 13, 14 -- I'd keep, but they are to my taste and color. YMMV.

I know color theory isn't exact science, but it seems to me some of these fall into spring/fall category (orange based) and some fall into winter/summer (blue-based)? Which is your best? For example, I cannot wear orange-based colors at all, so these were the scarves I purged awhile back. (Most of those, incidentally, were gifts from my mom/sister, who wear such colors beautifully -- I don't!).

I'd get rid of all the scarves with a fringe, and hold on like a madwoman to 3, 6, 7, 9 and 14

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm almost ready to let #1 and #2 go, I have nicer winter scarves and black doesn't look all that good near my face. As for coloring - cool tones look better on me, although I can wear neutral toned colors too and some warm colors mixed into a pattern don't look too bad as long as they're not overwhelming. The worst color on me is #12 I think, a warm rusty red brown. Looking at the loop scarves I think I prefer #14 to #13. I love the colors in #14 and the bit of orange mixed in echoes the orange in my specs. Not sure about the rest yet.

I'm also thinking of purging the leopard scarf in #3. I know it's supposed to be a classic and it's actually a leopard pattern that flatters me, but leopard isn't really my style.

Oh and #11 looks kind of juvenile, it's a cheap H&M scarf.

Keep 14!!! I love the colours in 5-7 too, and suspect they look very good on you. Those are the ones I'd probably keep, with 10 & 11 as 'maybes,' but it depends on where you want to go with your style, you know?

Okay, had another look and #8 and #10 don't drape well, that's probably the reason I haven't worn them much. And #4 looks a bit ratty. That would leave the ones below... I've actually worn all of these a lot for a while, besides #1.

I would purge: 1,2,4,7, and 11. The rest look very appealing to me and I think could still work for you.

I am far more hesitant about purging scarves as they take so little room. a small shoe box can store quite a few while you decide

Thistle, I already have scarves stored away in shoe boxes because they don't fit into my wardrobe! I don't have much storage space, having one box less goes a long way. Although I can understand you too. I think I would be more hesitant if these were good quality scarves, but they were all inexpensive and the fabric isn't something special.
