Need Some Good Vibes - ... gah; sick. :(

Dear YLF Ladies,

Sorry I have been very very sparse - had a severe allergic reaction to ___? and it keeps on coming back. Been to see a few dermatologists and everyone is scratching their heads; I think it may be the chemical preservatives used in some of my clothes that haven't been fully washed out. Ugh. That or something I've been exposed to in the hospital on a continuous basis.

Right now, I have rashes and my skin is peeling like a lizard (ugh) and I think we've finally got a handle on it with high dose steroids ... I may have to go for chemical testing later this week (really don't want to - ugh) ... but hopefully with some good vibes all of this grossness will go away!

One of the internists is suggesting all this skin stuff is a manifestation of my "stress" - I'm a medical student! OF COURSE I HAVE STRESS! HAHAHAHA. :p

I apologize; haven't been really dressing as nice as I usually do - just trying to pick things that are not itchy!

Here to send good vibes and totally commiserate with you, Lyn! I've been passed around from specialist to specialist, and no one knows what caused mine for sure... we DO, however, know that one of the two antibiotics they gave me caused additional, larger rashes all over my arms and neck. Awesome! They all seem to be dying down now, but it would be nice to have answers. :T

Oh dear. This is a mysterious and confounding issue that can seriously make one despair. (I've been through it.) I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. In my case acupuncture actually helped a lot. I will send healing thoughts. Anyway, so glad for your dress purchase!

I'm so sorry. Hope you get everything figured out and fixed. I had a horrible problem with the skin around my eyes a few months back (flaking, peeling, swollen). Never figured out what caused it, but the only thing that helped it was slathering on pure petroleum jelly.

Lyn, good luck with solving the mystery rash issue! One thing I noticed when I used to have eczema in the winter was that any shortage of sleep would really aggravate it and cause severe itching. One time I actually had to take a nap to make the itching go away. I know I am sounding like your doctor (do medical students have lack of sleep issues? Duh!) but that might be something to keep in mind.

Oh, no. That is not fun at all. Hope you find out what it is.
I have to wash my clothes before wearing, there is something in them that gives me rashes. I would defenitely start doing that if I were you, just rule out one of the possible culprits.
Stress may not be the main cause, but it is not entirely unlikely that it was a combination of your allergy, tiredness and stress that made you skin react like this. Hope your skin heals quickly and that you find out soon what caused it.

A friend of a friend had a terrible and mysterious facial rash and couldn't figure out what was triggering it. Eventually, it was traced to animal hair cosmetic brushes used with her mineral makeup. I hope you find a solution; that sounds just awful!

Oh you poor, poor thing! I don't know how you can alleviate stress and get more sleep as an intern!!! I hope it resolves itself REALLY soon. Like yesterday.

Oh no! Hope you feel better soon. Idiopathic conditions are the WORST.

I'm sure your dr. has checked/will check this, but have you ruled out an allergy to your latex/nitrile gloves at the hospital? I am not allergic to my gloves at lab (I have been tested) but sometimes my skin will freak out and my hands will itch like mad when I have to wear the gloves for no apparent reason. Anyway, this is just to say that even though you may not be technically allergic to something, your skin may just have developed a (hopefully temporary) heightened sensitivity to it because of stress or whatever.
