Need Help Styling A Hobo

I had been wanting a nice leather hobo bag for a long time so I jumped on the occasion when shopping in a consignment store in Victoria, B.C.,over Christmas. A nice roomy London Fog "Eliza" in "lipstick".

I did hesitate about the very orangy tan colour before buying. In the end I got it.

But now I find it very difficult to style! I don't know what colours to wear it with, and it doesn't match very well with my Joseph Siebel brown winter booties (http://www.ogamigam.com/produc.....brown-boot).

I'm unsure about my black boots too.

What would you suggest? Was it a bad purchase?

I don't think your bag needs to match your footwear, especially with the more casual hobo. If it doesn't feel right, maybe you could look for a scarf with colors that would pull the two together. I would use the bag with the brown booties and black boots. How does the bag look with your coat?

I don't think it was a bad purchase, but I can see the issue with the cooler brown booties. What colour are the coats you are wearing most? I know you have your black puffer, correct?

I like it! The color is very pretty, and should be possible to pair with several different colorways. I think you could style it in many different directions. Black would be obvious to me, but the style of boot would play a part in the decision, too. I think your brown winter booties are just fine with it, especially if you could pick up the color from the bag in a scarf instead (the Angie way). For Spring, I would pair it with lighter footwear, maybe gray, cream or even white.

I had a red hobo a long time ago. I wore it with a black trench, or a tan trench, and a scarf that had black, golden brown and two colours of red ( orangey red and pinky red) in the design. The purse style works well with casual ( jeans) looks too, and I would use a plaid scarf if I felt that I needed to repeat the colour. Red and chambray is a winning combo, as is red with animal prints.

I didn't worry about matching any of my footwear, but for casual red sneaks could be cute.

Don't worry about matching bag to footwear. Cognac goes with everything. I wear my new cognac bag with virtually every color coat and shoes.

With a bag like that I would wear all neutrals and let it stand out.

Yes, matching it to a scarf would surely be a solution to tie in everything.

Angie, the problem is when I wear it now with black or brown booties, I feel mismatched, all over the place.

Suz put the finger on it: boots are a cool brown, whereas the bag is an orange-y tan, very "warm".

I have a black puffer coat, two black military style wool coats, one charcoal wool coat, and one brown puffer short jacket, of a muted cool brown tone.

I think the answer is definitely one more piece in warmer tones, perhaps a hat, gloves, or scarf. This will tie it all together.

I think the bag will work beautifully with lighter weight jackets in the fall. How does it look with your mustard moto?

To me the bag will look great with the black coats and charcoal one.

Thank you! Great solutions, Suz and Cocolion. Suz, it looks good with the mustard moto. Can't wait when all I need to wear outside is that topper! I will get more warm tone accessories, it should make a difference.

It looks brick red on my computer which I think goes with the boots you posted & a lot of other colours too. I have a tomato red bag. It is more versatile than brown because some browns go together but not all IMO, but this colour goes with all browns, black, grey, white, metallic & more but I won't go on.

Elle, you are right, except really the colour is tan almost orange.

There are ways to bookend the booties and the bag that will make your outfit feel more pulled together:

- with a scarf that repeats the colours

- with a patterned top or topper that repeats colours

- with a belt that repeats colours

There seem to be no end of the scarves that would help tie things together if you felt the need for it.

Must be just my screen Krishnidoux. Angie has great suggestions though. I've got a paisley pashmina & a paisley scarf that have all those colors that pull the outfits together.

What Angie said! And I think the bag looks great and your bag and shoes don't have to match but it can take a while for the eye to adjust if you are used to matching.

Red is a neutral--I would wear it with everything! Before my bag collection exploded, my one and only bag was red (Fossil red leather tote) and I wore it with EVERYTHING. Great bag score!
