I find watches to be too personal, perhaps because both of us see it as the sort of item where one's bought to last. Classy, classic, statement, discrete. Therefore I would not buy one without talking to my husband about it first. I know such approach does take away the element of surprise, but does ensure the right thing will have been chosen.
As Mo had put it, the one my husband wears costs like a car would (well, not exactly, but almost), but bearing in mind how carefully it was chosen, how good its after-care service is and how it's looked after by hubby himself, it was well worth it.
Just my two pennies worth.
