There was a fire nearby yesterday afternoon. A storm was coming and we had very high winds before any rain. A fire started and spread quickly, burning a dozen buildings.
Friends living 1/3 mile away were told to evacuate. The police pounded on their door, actually. A neighbor and I were texting back and forth, wondering if we would be told to evacuate. We decided to pack necessary things - clothes, laptops, etc. We’ve lived here for 25 years and never thought about this before. We don’t live out in the wildland urban interface.
Things were complicated by our cable and internet being out, due to the wind, probably. We had NPR on, and they had updates every half hour or so. We just didn’t know what was going on. On my cell phone, theoretically I could get to the internet, but it was painfully slow, and useless for all practical purposes. Our lack of information in this information age was frustrating.
Have any of you been in this situation? Is there a solution to this lack of information? Thankfully, it’s raining this morning.
