NAS - probably everyone knows this except me, but...

I purchased two jackets today:

This one in grey:

I was tickled to learn that during the anniversary sale, alterations are handled as though the items are full price, i.e. most of them are FREE! So I was able to have the waist nipped just a bit on both, and a some minor length alterations as well.

As I said in the post title, maybe everyone knows this but me, but it makes a huge difference! Just wanted to be sure everyone else knew this as well.

No, I did not know that because I do not shop at Nordstroms routinely. I'm so glad you brought this to our attention. Thanks, Tracy--I will definitely remember this for the next NAS.

I love the speckled jacket!

I love Nordstrom alterations. I buy my jeans at Banana Republic then walk down to Nordstrom to have them altered, even though it costs me about $30 extra because they do such an amazing job for me in the places I need it. I've had other jobs botched elsewhere and the ladies at Nordstrom get it right every time. The funny thing is I've never had anything I've purchased there altered so I've never been able to take advantage of the free-of-charge alterations!

wilson - It never occurred to me that I could have them alter things I bought somewhere else! I'm glad you mentioned it. I've had such a difficult time finding someone who can do good tailoring; maybe my "new" Nordstrom seamstress is it!

medusa - I'm working up my nerve to post photos. I've signed up for a photobucket account but haven't used it yet. I don't know why I'm so uptight about this, because the YLF community is so supportive and kind.

Hmmm...I bought this jacket, had it hemmed, and it cost me $38.

In fact, I've had a number of Nordstrom purchases altered, and have always been charged. Could this be a regional thing?

Katja, it may be the type of alteration that's required - not all of them are free. Maybe you just needed some of the more time-consuming ones. On one of my jackets we were discussing whether it would be better to take in back darts or the side seams, and due to the construction one would cost, the other would be free.

I'm picking the jacket up this week - I'll ask. There was no fitting, it was just shortening the hem evenly all the way around.

This is Nordstrom's policy:

"Easy Alterations

Every Nordstrom store has on-site alterations and tailoring. Simply take any items you would like altered and your packing slip to a store near you. Fees for this service are determined after the item has been fitted, based on the complexity of your request. Select services are free on full-priced merchandise."

Tracy - do go for it. I felt v uncomfortable posting initially (more privacy obsession than anything else) and posted without my face showing. It was easy to move to face showing, and I control what I post carefully and take it down after a little while.

It is lined. The sales associate was doubtful, but the alterations lady was completely blase about - no problem, she says. It won't hurt to ask.

I picked up my coat and asked about free alterations. "Hems," she said. "But shortening," she indicated her waist and cuffs, "always has a charge."
