As a response to Mary's comment which I posted on today's blog post:

"Fashion stylists are not immune to style and fit challenges".

As a response to Rae's comment which I also posted on today's blog post:

"Striking the right combination with flats in any outfit is edgier than wearing heels. It’s so expected to wear heels with everything in our fashion world these days – and the higher the better. That’s why I have this opinion about flats. Flats are fringe".

And there you go.

Both statements are very perceptive, and I agree with both!

I love my heels, but sometimes I actually really like a flat shoe, even better than something with a slight heel. I seem to favor one extreme or the other!

I'm glad you feel that way about flats Angie, because for the most part, that's what I wear being a MOTG. I like the first comment, too. It seems obvious once you say it, but I guess we probably think you have no styling challenges...

As I said on the blog thread, I totally agree with no. 2. On the rare occasions I wear flats, I feel like a rebel!

I must say no. 1 is a revelation to me!

Ha! I am *so* feeling the need for just the right flat to exemplify my style. You're right - heels are easy. Flats that work, not so much!

Of course, common sense tells me that we all have style and fit challenges. It's just comforting to know that we are all in the same boat, one way or another! I'm just now slowly learning what my challenges are and unlearning what I thought were fit challenges for me but really aren't. Just hit me over the head with it every now and then, and I'll get it!

As for #2 -- hip, hip, hooray!

#1 - Of course! Fashion stylists have a bigger hurdle than anyone, in terms of audience expectation vs experimentation.

#2 - I love flats.

Hm, maybe that's why I'm coming around to flats! They DO feel edgier. I did have to put maybe 6 years of work into finding a flat riding boot that worked for me, though. Much more challenging all around.

I think all *humans* have style and fit challenges! We're all shaped differently, and very few of us have clothes custom tailored. Styles are always changing, so it's challenging to keep up-to-date and fresh, even if you have a signature style. So I bet there's a lot of pressure on fashion stylists to "get it right"!

Angie, I cannot imagine the kind of pressure that comes with being such a public personality, especially when it involves how you look--all the time! You handle it so beautifully and are so gracious and generous to everyone else about how we look...so positive and complimentary. Thanks for these revelations. #1 is enlightening to me, and #2 is good news to my ears! (Recent bunion surgery has helped my feet but I think I am just happier in a cool pair of flats than in high heels.)

Sometimes I find I don't pick up on a fit issue until I actually wear the garment. I imagine with your experience Angie that you can often anticipate potential style and fit challenges and also work around those that appear unexpectedly, like the blouse, which btw is quite fab.

I love your statement re flats and I do agree they are fringe and most definitely add edge! I love that you defy the "fashionista" stereotype Angie by among other thing, wearing flats.

I agree with both but especially the second statement. I think flats have a "dowdy" association because you always see outfits sported with heels, and always read how heels help elongate a look.

Interesting Angie - I need to think on these a bit. I know when I wear one of the two pairs of flats I own, I feel slightly "rebellious" and I'm looking at getting a pair or two for winter which I never would have thought before.

As far as #1 goes, Janet hit the nail on the head. At the end of the day, celebrities, rock stars, rocket scientists, professors, engineers, doctors, lawyers, vets, supermodels, judges, bloggers...... and fashion stylists are all just people. People who have real feelings that get hurt, have challenges like everyone else, and who also make mistakes. This realization is one of the most valuable life lessons that I have learned.

Well I am with you with #2 all the way, and, of course everyone makes mistakes or has difficulties with the things they are generally great at - otherwise they aren't challenging themselves just repeating.

Actually, I didn't find this statement bold at all! Everybody who's a "specialist" of any sort has off-days, struggles to integrate new ideas/techniques/tools/processes, makes mistakes that they "should have caught earlier", etc.

The true challenge isn't in hiding our issues, it's in how we recover from them after the cat's out of the bag :). And I LOVE that you called out your fit issues for us to learn from, Angie!

Your honesty is refreshing - and unusual Occasionally I will run into a fashion stylist/blog with such candor (Sally McGraw comes to mind) and those are the ones I keep following and tune into. The fashionistas who don't admit to the reality of fit/price/lifestyle are like catalog models more than reporters. I love your analysis.

Experts in any field have their challenges, true - but they are still experts and for the most part, know their stuff. I'd pay closer attention to them than a lay person with a random hit-and-miss comment.

Angie, this is why I tend to listen very carefully when you recommend a particular flat. You know foot comfort, and you know style, and you're determined to have both. This is my goal as well, and I love that you do the research so I don't have to.

#1 - Oh, wow, so you're a human too

#2 - This is interesting! For a long time I had a very strong desire to wear heels because I'm so tall and therefore I wasn't expected to wear anything but flats. And I definitely had my share of fun. But, now, I consider myself a lot more style and comfort literate then in my early YLF days, and I am so much more prepared to embrace the flats not just because I'm supposed to wear them, but because they make life so much easier. Add striving to be edgier to the mix, and I'm really excited about them now
