My Turn: Cropped Sweater Over Long Shirt

I'm glad to see I'm not the only who's been struggling with this look! I thrifted this cropped sweater last month because I love the light blue color, the sleeves are long enough for me, and it's warm! I started the day with a white button down shirt but changed to this Pleione navy blue tunic shirt after reading here that less contrast might work better with a crop sweater. I'm not sure the collar of this shirt, which is a split neck collar, works. Pants are my new Banana Republic wonder pants which didn't rip when I fell a couple of weeks ago. Can I wear this again or should I make further tweaks to the concept? Your thoughts are appreciated.

That's a really pretty sweater and it actually IS cropped on you (the way they are supposed to fit, I think). Score! I think finding an item like this at a thrift store is a really smart way to experiment with little risk.

I think this works pretty darned well on you, actually. I do see what you are saying about the collar. I wonder if a scarf instead of a necklace would solve that issue -- though it might feel like a lot of layers. I had a similar problem with my Pleione shirt when I tried to layer a vest over it -- it somehow didn't feel right.

I think you could go lower contrast in the opposite direction - i.e. keep the white (or light) shirt, making for a low contrast top part.

This sweater would be amazing in an otherwise all white outfit!

I like the outfit on you! I'm stumped on the collar; I think it looks good. Sometimes I've just tucked the collar ends into a sweater, when I didn't like the way they looked out, but this one might not work that way with the split design. You could try leaving off the necklace, especially if you're bothered by the collar opening, because it does draw attention to the space. But really, I love the colors, the length of the sweater, and the layering here. Nicely done!

I love the sweater but I am struggling with the banded bottom over the shirt. That doesn't quite work to my eye. I think I prefer a more fluid sweater over a shirt. Don't get me wrong, this looks nice:)

What about tucking the blouse and having the cropped over the blouse?...Something about it is not working for my eye...I would loose the necklace and tuck the shirt under the sweater for a more minimalist look...The sweater is really cute...I like the pants, too...Play with it and you will have a great outfit...

i'm struggling with this as well, so please take my comments with a grain of salt. i really like the light blue sweater with the dark shirt, but as you said, something is off with the collar....is is possible to button one more button so the the collar is less relaxed? also, maybe scrunch or fold back the sleeves of the sweater to show some of the navy of the shirt? ....and would you be willing to show us the version with the white shirt?

Like Deborah .. I find the banded bottom a bit off putting. But I like the concept for you and you should definitely try this with a non banded cropped top. I wonder if I am in the minority though.

Try a low contrast shirt under the cropped sweater. I think that will sort out a lot of challenges. Good job trying though. The trousers look fab. xo
