I'm making big progress in my shopping strategy. I was buying some gifts from JCrew earlier this week and ordered 4 things for myself. After trying them on tonight, three are going back to the local store (had free shipping, so nothing lost on shipping to or from, yea!). The only thing I'm keeping for me is this tee, in ORANGE!

It's funny that the three things going back were on significant sale. I probably wouldn't have purchased them in the first place if not for the sale, and the old me would have justified keeping "ok" stuff for that price, but not the new me.

Good for you! Life is too short for so-so clothing.
I had the same feeling about sale items before. Now I getting more ruthless too...it is YLF effect!

I'm sure I return well over 75% of my purchases, and I don't feel the least bit bad about it. (although at times it gets tiring.. that's when I know I need to take a little break from shopping)

(laughs at AJ) I know exactly how you feel, prior to YLF I would buy just anything if it fit. Now, I'm looking for "structure, structure, structure" lol. No more baggy crapolla for me I'm shopping more purposefully now. Great, huh?

That's exactly how it has to be. Hold your purchases to high standards and you'll have a wardrobe full of clothes you're happy wearing. Way to go Ms. Ruthless Shopper!

I really need to get ruthless too. I have a huge pile of new tops from Fairweather (final sale, all $25 each) that I have since rejected before leaving the house. Yikes. I feel terribly guilty.

I fInd it enviable that you have the confidence to be a ruthless shopper. As a beginner I am floundering so in the sea of style education that I wouldn't know where to begin in a real shop. Shopping my closet is challenge enough.
Every day I take photos of WI would like to Wear and 90% of the outfits go into the "fixit" pile: hems up, hems down, side seams in, sleeves off, necklines adjusted. And on top of it all I measured my body proportions and am now trying to dress all my idiosyncrasies to achieve the Rule of Thirds!
Who said fashion was fun?

Thanks for the great words of encouragement. The next step, I think, will be defining my style and wardrobe needs to myself so I can hopefully weed out some things before I get to this stage.

Lantana, I'm not an expert shopper or anything. So far, I just getting what I REALLY love, and if i don't love it, it goes back, even if it was $5. Baby steps.

I agree with Queen Mum, I did buy and return a lot of my purchases. At least 75% like QM. At first I felt bad but I begin to get used to it. And like QM, I need to take a break from my shopping also. Not only, my bank account needs a break too. Lol !

Great news! I did a lot of buying and returning when I first found YLF. It took me quite while to understand fit of clothes. I've gotten better at that now and have less returns. But sometimes you have to take it home first because the fitting room lighting is so poor.

Me too I have had 4 packages/ 12 items arrive over the past 3 weeks and *everything* is going back. It's actually quite satisfying too, I used to just keep things because they sort of fit wheras now I'm much more picky. They have to fit or be easily and cheaply alterable and I have to love them x

This is great! One of the hurdles to a working wardrobe is all the 'not quite' clothes. The less of these you have to work around, the better.
