My picks from Lands' End fall

I recently received a new Lands' End catalog with fall items and I was really impressed by both the clothes and the styling. LE has long been a consistent option but has not always been the most fashionable. I think they've done a nice job of balancing practical and fashion-forward for their audience. LE could be a good option if you like Talbots, Massimo Dutti, etc., but have to watch your budget. (Also, almost everything is available in petite and plus.)

1 - dress it up, dress it down - mixed media cardigan that would work for the office or weekend
2 - tall boots with a stretch panel in back for those of us who have problems getting boots to fit our legs. Also available in wide.
3 - colorblock sweater in several different color combinations; I love this one and the gray/pink
4 - I keep seeing shirts with narrow horizontal stripes recently but most are silk and dry clean only. This is a more casual option.
5 - military surplus look but available in navy as well as black or olive
6 - continuing with the idea of fancied-up sweatshirts from last winter, these have lace fronts

What do you think? Anything else you like from LE?

I like LE for quality basics. Word of warning to look at the item dimensions before ordering though...I keep having to size down so I don't swim in their stuff. Last year I got size 6-8 petite; this year I have several of the art tees and I need size 2-4. I definitely not a size 2-4 anywhere else lol!

Ack! I'm loving that color blocked sweater! I wish there was a way to better see the color of that "vicuna". Is it taupe or is it camel? Is the white creamy or optic? This is why I return almost everything I buy online. But I think L.E. has some really good options this Fall. Thanks for the heads up Laura!

ETA: I got a really great swim suit from them mid-summer. It fits SO well, and will likely outlast lesser quality suits.

I like these Blakeley Riding Boots in hazelnut. If they fit my athletic calves I could check a HEWI off my list. The Jacquard Chinos in black or dark maroon might be a fun holiday pant.
I'm a big fan of LE -- Dodgeville WI is just down the road a piece. Their quality is usually very good and their return policy is excellent.

I saw those boots too- love! I generally fall back on LE for staples/gear and motg swimsuits. Trying to break out of the bubble, but there's always something that pulls me back in. This time, the boots.

Some nice pieces indeed! I had read somewhere that they hired stylist Kelly Framel last summer to up the style ante on some of their women's pieces- or at least I think it was LE ..anyways, I quite like the striped shirt, the anorak and even the lace t. All are on sale right now too! Thanks for the review

Lands End has never fit me very well. I finally figured out that the fit model must be curvy and I'm not. I have completely given up on them after several tries. Even when I weighed more the fit was never like the pictures. I'm convinced that they pin things to fit for photos when they are actually wide and boxy.

The past few years, their ponte knit dresses have been a home run! I have two of the 3/4 sleeve dresses, and one of the ponte shift with pockets. They are a really nice ponte knit. They keep bringing back the shift, but I haven't seen my 3/4 dress in a while.

I find LE hit or miss for me, but I was also excited by the new catalogue and may order a few things. Love that color blocked sweater!

Laurinda, I've got very muscular calves and the Blakely boots in that color. They are a little lose in the ankle, but we're the bast fit I've found for my calves in at least a decade. I really hope they work for you!

Nice picks. I love looking at their stuff. Personally, I feel I need all their tops to be about an inch longer. But I think that's just me. I looked really closely at that jacket--I quite like it--but I think it will be too short. That vee neck cardigan is quite nice--I had not noticed that before. Great picks.

Waving at Joy... the fit is off for me at LE, too. I can get the occasional gear item there, and once had a coat from them I liked. But mostly, things just look wrong on me.

But I do find things for my mother. She is very thin, but somehow some of the items do work for her whereas they don't on me. I have yet to figure out why that is for sure, but I suspect it might be because I'm a little higher waisted than she is. She's also an inch or two taller than I am.

Im not much of a lands end shopper but I will testify that their swimsuits wear like IRON even in chlorine... and I have a cashmere cardigan by them from ca. 2000 with nary a pill. Not sure how they fared in terms of quality since that whole sears retailing debacle though,

I love LE for the quality. Their t-shirts are nice and thick, the cardigans come in many colors, the swimsuits look great, and everything seems to last forever. I'm actually thinking of ordering a bunch of cardigans and doctoring them up with some bias tape like I did with the red one.

I agree that LEs sizing can be uh, unexpectedly roomy. I have never, never, gotten jeans or pants that have fit from them. I always assumed that they were best for a rectangular figure but it sounds like that might not be the case. Maybe best for apples? Their sweaters are some of the longest lasting I've ever had, though, and same with shoes and swimsuits.

Laurinda, I lived in Wisconsin when I was in college and used to order stuff from their clearance section (they had some kind of increasing discount thing where if you waited until it was almost sold out you got stuff super cheap - what can I say, I was a poor college kid) and it would arrive super quick, like the next day sometimes. It was awesome. I'm glad they're still around and kicking, even after being bought by Sears etc.

Interesting that you mentioned the most recent catalog! I flipped through it last night and was impressed. It reminded my of J Crew in 2007. Actually, I think they are competing hard with J Crew for basics. One of their sweaters looks like an exact replica of the Tippi.

I love Lands End. Their fit is spot on for me in tops. I am hard to fit on top, so it is awesome to have a reasonable priced option. For some reason, I don't shop their bottoms.

I like LE for basics - ponte pants, cardigans and workout/lounge wear. They have definitely upped the ante style wise in last year. I also like that the denim comes in multiple shapes.
Good service (replaced a lost order for me with NO hassle recently) and you can return at local Sears store.
Men's stuff is good quality for shirts and slacks as well.

@Laura: I miss LE's 'almost perfect' 2nds shop on Madison's State St. Luckily with LE quality my parka, wool coat, down vest, and collection of mis-monogrammed canvas tote bags should last me a long, long time. Good luck with your LE choices!

Laurinda, I have been to the LE second's shop in Madison and it was such fun...I am in and out with LE...Way too much just made me look like el frumpo...I am interested in the new designer...who is Karen Frame?...

I buy LE for my kids outerwear (rainjackets, etc) because they wear like iron and have sealed seams, etc- very nice quality.
I haven't had much luck with my own clothes from them, though. The fit has always been too short and too boxy on my frame.
