my 'party' dress - keep, alter, or purge?

This dress I bought to wear for my 40th but ended up in a pink satin and chiffon number instead, at the insistence of my BF. I eventually wore this for New Year's Eve in FL later on. It's a great fit on me, but definitely reads party and I'm not so sure how many situations it's really the right dress for. I was thinking of removing the mesh flouncy underlayer for a more sedate silhouette. Or should I pass it on to a younger friend? Or should I just wear it in all it's flounciness for festive party occasions only? (I'm 43 in May)

How do you feel in the dress Mo? I think it looks great on you but I know looking good & feeling good are not the same thing.

Caro, I'm not sure. I feel flirty and fun in it, but admit that was only in FL. Not sure I can imagine a Tahoe venue where it would fit in. And the longer it is until such venue pops up, the older I continue to get and wonder if it's too young for me lol.

It's a really pretty dress. Lovely colours for you. And festive/ fun. But yes - it really depends on how you feel, wearing it. If you can't imagine feeling great in it now, maybe pass it along. You will find the right party dress for the next occasion when you are ready.

This is where I wonder if removing the mesh flippy layer would transform it from 'party' to date or going out? Maybe? If not, I probably should pass it along.

Would removing it ruin the dress? If so, you seem a bit too lukewarm to give it a try on the off chance that it changes how you feel about the dress.

I have no doubts that the dress would be fantastic on you but it is more about how you feel than how the dress looks. Don't you think?

How difficult would it be to remove the mesh? Would you ruin the dress if you did? Even if you did remove the mesh, does it still feel like you. From what I have seen of your style, this dress wouldn't have been my first choice for you. However,it is all about how you feel in it. It looks pretty on you, but does it make you feel pretty? And I hate writing this, but it feels a but young to me. I think it is the combination of the slip dress with the mesh.

Is the mesh a full skirt length like a slip where you could take a picture with it pulled up and not visible?

The mesh is at the very bottom. No issue with the underlayer. I could even just cut it and things would be fine.
Thistle I also think a few factors added together make this feel young. I am going to go ahead with mesh removal! Perhaps a more flowy skirt, vs flippy will help it along. If not, it will still be fine to send on to someone else if I don't like it

Okay, without the mesh, or proper undergarments (sorry, l've been home, sick, for days and not up for a proper dress up session). I'm thinking toss. It feels somehow too frilly and too uncovered all at the same time.
Any of you younger YLF'ers interested?

It is more the fabric and the banded waist that throw me off as opposed to the style itself. You clearly have the figure to pull of a similarly styled dress, so am not even sure "bare" is a factor. I just think this dress isn't good enough overall for you.

I think if the fabric were less shiny, taking out the tulle lining might work. Then you might have a sun dress. I've been purging things like this -- I like them, but they do not fit my lifestyle.

It's something about the fabric plus pattern plus cut that makes it a bit juniors to my eye - although you can certainly rock it! I think your taste is now edgier and a little more sophisticated, though.

I don't think it looks like you anymore, unfortunately, even without the mesh. The colors, pattern, and style could all be doable on their own, but together they look tad bit twee compared to your usual outfits. Your mesh overlay dress with a blush sweater or jacket and a touch of sparkle would feel just as festive (IMO) and keep the basic black/pink color scheme, but look more like Mo 2013.

Yep, I think this is ghost of Mo pastl! I feel almost in costume, not stylish in this anymore. Off it goes. I do already have an outfit mockup, Rae, of the moto with mesh LBD lol! Much more me now.

Sounds like you "sorted it out" Mo. I think it's hard to know when to keep or toss special occasion dresses. I have a purple stretch velvet in the surplice wrap top style with the ruched waist that was trending 5 years ago. Do I keep? It's in my "holding" storage, waiting for a rare decisive moment!

The fundamental question is: A "special occasion" dress should make you feel "special." Do you feel "special" in it? Is it who you are today?

I don't find it juvenile on you exactly (when you reach 50, I will, hehe). But the fabric and pattern bother me a little bit. I find it kinda pretty but without style...

Wow, you sure have the bod for that dress, make no mistake. I'd love to play dress-up dolls with your figure! And it does fit you really well. But I think, in order to look sophisticated, it would need to be quite a bit longer. Also, the waist is high, which can look girly. I vote give it to a younger friend.
