My latest possibly weird hair idea

I have a hair appointment late next week and an idea occurred to me tonight. I currently have my asymmetric cut (which I'm still really enjoying) and my stylist and I have been slightly altering it a little each time I go back. Lately we've been keeping a bit more length on the overall cut while taking a bit more off the short side (not to the point of clippers or shaving though). I also have a couple of streaks of lighter color on the underside of the longer side. Of course, as the color fades a little, that light shade turns a bit brassy but that just comes with the territory.

Well, tonight I thought it might be fun to play into the whole gray/silver thing by coloring those streaks silver next time instead of caramel or a light brown. I also like the idea of a more unexpected color, but I don't really want to do blue/red/green -- I like that a neutral would not clash with any of my outfits.

My husband loves the idea. I'm going to see what my stylist thinks but thought I'd put it out there to the ylf hive mind as well.

I kind of like the idea of embracing the grey in what almost feels like a more subversive way -- the silver/grey mainly only appears when the hair is in movement, or peeks out from the dark part. Kind of a sly admission of the fact that I am going grey and adopting it in my own way, rather than just letting it creep in strand by strand at the roots.

It sounds interesting and worth a try. I am fascinated. So there is such a thing as silver color for hair?! Has anyone seen it on grey or white hair?

I love the idea of this. I love silver streaks in dark hair and have always adored Angie's client Karen's hair with her front silver streak. Personally I like to play around with colour, as if you don't like it, it is totally reversible. Haircuts on the other hand scare me, because I have had a few short cuts that were terrible and took forever to grow out.

Fantastic idea! I toyed around with it when I stopped dyeing my hair as well. Unfortunately I could not find a single supportive soul around me, nor a capable hairstylist so I had to ditch it and went back to dyeing my hair.

Yes, dying hair grey on purpose (it's kind of a "bright grey") is a big thing right now -- lots of the kids are doing it.

If you haven't seen this, it's often referred to as silver, but it's not actually metallic.

I think it's a cool idea, Janet.

Sounds cool and fun. I like the playfulness with the gray/silver and why not go for it? You will wear it well.

Have seen salon photos of dark brown hair tipped in a subtle deep eggplant. Very beautiful. Wonder how it plays IRL. Have a friend who adds her fun color/s to the underside of one section of her shorter hair. The magic appears with movement. You've got me day dreaming...oops.

On another note, we have similar hair color and my stylist often adds toner, I think with violet undertones, to keep any brassy yellowing at bay.

I realize that this will be a deeper commitment to lighten that portion of my hair -- I suppose it would have to be bleached to strip my natural dark tones from that portion in order to achieve the bright light silver-grey.

Bella, thanks for the links! Some great looks there. I'm definitely envisioning something that is half-hidden at first glance. I'm not overly fond of the very high contrast light face-framing part with the rest of the hair dark (at least, not for me), but there are a couple of photos in there that give an idea of what I want to do.

I love the idea of some silver streaks on you! I got a few turquoise highlights in my dark brown hair a few weeks ago. I thought I was being oh so edgy but it seems so common now that barely anyone remarks on it. I love it more every time I see it! Have fun, if you don't like it you can always get rid of it on your next trip to the salon.

Sometimes you gotta be a leader..... the only real opinion you need from your stylist is "are you the one who can make my vision into reality?" from a technical standpoint, not a "do you think this is gonna look OK?" point of view. Line up 10 hair stylists and ask for a personal opinion, you will get 10 viewpoints that have everything to do with their own internal definition of what is pretty, and nothing to do with the actual human in front of them. (As for my own backyard, about 98% of the hairdressers to be found are VERY young, they may not have a good 'eye' for cool, age-appropriate ladies like us yet. My hairdresser is very young yet very talented, it was an education for her to get to the natural white that I finally, totally, insistantly am!)

You seem to be excited and brave and ready to take this on, not to mention how striking all the photo examples that bella has shared are! You got this.......

P.S. SHINE is the key to striking white or silver locks, our secret! Shhhhh...

Silver is just a color- and very beautiful color actually. Forget about the association with the old and unkempt, it is very unfortunate.

Bennett, good point. I've been going to my hairstylist for 13 years now -- in that time he has gone from being a young employee in a salon to opening two successful new salons, and he is talented and is always staying current on techniques and trends. Also, he gets me. He is always happy to help me figure out ways to keep up to date and do something new and exciting. He has never discouraged me from being adventurous. I think he will enjoy this challenge!

Hah! Your stylist sounds exactly like my stylist! Even to the point of 13 years and two salons. Whatever happens he'll do you proud.

I think the new plan sounds good. Don't be afraid to try a bright colour - it could be a fun challenge, it's only temporary and I think you could pull it off. True confession: I maintained a vibrant shade of peacock blue for a year or two in the late '90s.
