My Lantern dress...and help me choose a dress?

So the end of the stalking saga...I bought a black one just in case the blue one never came, and ended up liking the black one the best. The blue one did come, but it fit strangely...gaping in the right arm hole. I bet that's why it was available in the first place.

Now I've learned that 1) self photos are impossible! How do you get the angle right? 2) taking pictures does not improve self esteem! Not sure how you ladies do it daily!

Photo 1...happiness is pretty high. Cool and comfortable, casual but a little special. And I swear on the September issue I won't wear those shoes with the dress!
Photo 2...my only concern...is the racer back too much on my wide IT shoulders?
Photos 3 & 4...I've had these for awhile. Do they look too young for 53?
Photo 5...another choice but its a little big and shapeless...and maybe too hot and formal.

Remember, this is for a very casual outdoor August wedding.

I like 1 and 3 on you. I can't put my finger on it, but 4 isn't making you look as pretty as you are. And I agree with Ceit on 5. It looks too big.

The lantern dress looks great! I actually like the back on you - as someone with sloping shoulders, I think racerback styles only look good on strong shoulders like yours!

I like the dress in #3, and don't think it looks too young. #4 looks a bit dated to me, like it's too much what with the empire waist with bow, busy print and ruffle all together. I don't think you look inappropriate in it though, although I do think it's less sophisticated than the others.

#5 does look a bit too big, but what happens if you add a belt? Or a structured jacket (although obviously that would be for cooler days)?

Peri I love the black dress and imo not an issue in the shoulders at all. I can see this working well for the wedding. I also like dress 3 - the polka dots. I feel is it very flattering in fit, colour and not too young.
Those are my two faves. I love the colour of the last one but it seems large as some of the ladies have pointed out. Perhaps a photo with the length might and your legs showing might give a different perspective.

The black dress is lovely on you, and I agree with Diana that the cut looks best on those with a strong shoulder line. If black is not a problem at this wedding, then by all means, it could work.

I also like the polka dot dress on you.

Ditto what the others said about the other two dresses -- not fab enough for you, although the last one's a great colour.

And you do not look 53 by any stretch of the imagination!!

As for taking selfies, yes, it is hard on a bunch of levels. But honestly, it is SO USEFUL.

What everyone else has said. I'm sorry about the blue lantern dress having a problem. You could wear the black dress or the polkadots. The polka dotted one seems a bit dressy, but maybe it's the belt.

Another thumbs up for 1 and 3! The cut looks great with your shoulders. The red of 5 is a great color on your but the cut doesn't flatter you as much as the dresses in 1 and 3.

YLF consensus! Yes on the the Lantern and the Polka dots! 4 & 5 aren't quite as flattering and modern. I do think 5 could be altered, if you enjoy wearing it.

I like #1 the best by far. I can see why you wanted it in blue, but the black is very lovely. Could you pop on some fun light colored accessories for a wedding?

Pic#3 or the second dress would be my second choice.

The last 2 dresses are not fab enough for you. Just not a fan of the pink one, and I think the red is too big.

Wow, I love the consensus! The pink dress is out! I did love it at one time...about 5 pounds and 10 years ago. Oh well, time flows on.

Angie, I have some black beaded sandals coming...Allegria so not the most chic, but the best I can do with all my foot injuries. At least better than gym shoes! I also have some pointed toe black suede flats that I think will work.

I'm happy the polka dot dress is still acceptable. I was worried it looked too young. That's not a belt Joy, it's contrasting fabric and a rosette. Hope that doesn't amp up the young factor! It's light and flowy but I think for my own fun...to have something new...I will go with the black lantern and some fun jewelry.

My vote is for #3, which I find flattering and festive. I'm not crazy about the belt/flower on belt, but they're not detractions. #1 seems to fit well; it strikes me as a casual dress. The line across the bust on #4 reads awkwardly to me, and the red does seem on the big side. I'd maybe get the red tailored, if you have the time and inclination.
