I was inspired by all of you to tally up what's in my closet, especially since nearly all of it is new. The numbers were not as bad as I thought! I counted the items and wrote them down a day or two ago. Tonight, I gave myself a special challenge: to write down each item from memory having only the category and quantity in front of me. I only missed about 4 items!
I used the same criteria as Suz. Basically, if it hangs in my closet, it's a wardrobe item. I keep accessories, gear, loungewear, layering tees, etc., in drawers. I hang everything else, even shirts that I might only use for layering but that are nicer than basic tees.
I have 95 pieces, 2 of which are too big and an additional 7 that I don't wear and plan to donate.
I have too many pants/jeans (14 that fit, 2 that are too big) but I wear them all. I like them all, and don't want to get rid of any of them. I have too few long-sleeved non-sweater tops (7). But it's layering season for me, so I'm not too worried about that. It's more of a feeling of being OK with accidentally finding a couple more without actively seeking them out.
I owned 20 of those pieces before 2013. I purchased 31 pieces in the spring/summer, while my size was still changing. I purchased 34 pieces since September. At some point, I picked up 10 skirts, but can't remember if it was spring, summer, or fall.
This is my entire wardrobe, for all seasons. I'm waiting on a casual shirtdress to arrive, and would love to have another dress or two but realistically I won't wear them in the winter. I'd like more long-sleeved pullover sweaters as I only have 3, but my 6 long-sleeved cardigans should suffice.
This was an interesting exercise! I particularly loved being able to name/describe each article of clothing. I'm going to leave my list handy to see if it helps me shop my closet.
