My First Maxi Dress (and WIW x6)

I went into Kohl's today to restock some basics, and came out with those, plus a summer maxi dress. I've never owned one before, but I thought it would be a nice boho addition for less active summer days.

I ended up with the plain black (photo 1) after trying on that and two prints (photos 2 and 3).

I also have just some random WIWs for you. I've been wearing a lot of repeats and forgetting to log and take photos recently, but I did manage these over the past two weeks:

Photo 4: Athleisure! Eddie Bauer cargo joggers and black linen tee with my new Puma sneakers.

Photo 5: Burgundy skinnies with taupe sweater and lace-topped tank peeking underneath. Frye oxfords hidden by my gigantic bag.

Photo 6: BF jeans and olive linen tee (the twin to the tee in #4)

Photo 7: Ochre chinos, floral blouse, cardigan.

Jenn -- I like your choice. You certainly cannot go wrong with a basic black dress -- very versatile. The high-low hem on it is nice… shows off your great sandals. I like all your casual outfits… especially #4 (love olive and black as a color combo) and #7 (fabulous blouse -- goes so well with the ochre chinos).

I love the dress in all three versions. I think the black was a good choice, but they all work. It's a very flattering silhouette for you. I haven't seen you wear one like that before, and it looks great!

The black looks good; seems more in line with your style preferences than the prints (I'd opt for the tan/black print for myself, but then I'm print crazy). Black will be versatile, and easier to style probably. Looks super with those sandals (which I also adore!). #4, 5 and 9 jump out at me but you look great in all of these looks. Casual and put together. You're doing a great job with your autumnal color palette in springy outfits ^^

Have fun with the maxi dress - great choice! You look wonderful in all of these outfits, and I think my favorite is #5. I'm not even sure why - but it is fantastic! And there is something really cool about #7 - I think that the color combination is so great.

Yes, I think the black was the best choice. Looks fab and will be very versatile. I think the striped dress is a close second. Both are a very flattering shape on you. Love your casual outfits. Especially 4, 5 and 9. I lurve your sandals. And how exciting that at this time of year you seem to be having similar weather to us (it's still quite warm here). I can look for ideas that I can use NOW. No 9 I could do tomorrow

I think you chose the right dress, it looks wonderful, the shape is lovely on you. I also like the print but I do think black dresses are easier to wear more often, and change up with accessories.

All you other looks are terrific. I especially like your American Eagle sandals

I like the black maxi, but I'm going to be a bit of a spanner here and suggest that the patterned one in #3 is even more fab. If you enjoy wearing the black one enough and need another dress for the season, I think it would be a great alternative.

Ledonna - Thank you! It is so hard some mornings to not just throw on the ballet flats and be done with it. The struggle is real.

Lisaflex, Colette, lyn67 - Interesting that you all liked #2, because that was the first one I grabbed, and I really did like it's...ahem... camouflaging properties. The only reason I ended up not getting is, is that I have a rule against bright white (and those white stripes were brighter than shows in the picture). I've ended up feeling not-great about items containing that color that I've brought into my closet in the past.

Brooklyn, our weather has been all over the place. We went to a soccer game last weekend and it was in the low 40s (around 6° C), but the mid-week, the high was 82 (28° C). These transitional seasons are wacky.

Kiwigal, I think those sandals are in for a good run. It's kind of odd that American Eagle carried them, because they're made by a company called Bed Stu. I've been following them on Instagram, and they have some GREAT options. I might have to go back for more from them, come fall.

Aida - I've been trying to add more pattern to my wardrobe, but old habits die hard!

Staysfit - I kept trying on full-length maxi dresses and not liking them. The hi-lo seems to make all the difference for me!

Janet - I really liked the pattern on #3, but the colors made me feel a little dead. Thinking about it, I'm not even sure why. It's the same color as the sweater in #5. Maybe it was just the dressing room lighting. Anyway, I might have ended up bringing more than one home if I'd realized I'd only pay $28 instead of the $50 it was marked. Hooray for surprise sales!

Casual maxi dresses with high-low hemlines are the only casual maxi dress way to go to my eye. Killer dresses, Jenn. Great with the pendant necklace too.

While I always pick black myself too, I kind of really love the two prints. #3 is especially flattering on you (I may be biased; i like prints ALOT for their slimming effect). But I'm glad you picked something that *you* will wear confidently and enjoy having in your closet.

Love the other outfits too. #4 & #5 are just fab!

Maxi dresses are cool and comfortable especially if you are in a hot part of the world where you get a lot of sunshine and you need that sunshine blocked while still getting sufficient air circulation. In places like Arizona, Sahara, Kalahari, Chihuahuan or other such places, that maxi dress in #1 is a staple of the local population and comes in many different styles.

The jeans look good on you too, I like how it gives your outfit structure while still being casual comfy.

Angie, I totally agree with you! I've tried on quite a few and this style is so much more wearable than the straight-hem ones.

Laura, very true about the functionality of maxi dresses! I live in an area with a variable climate, but one that is quite hot and dry in the summer, so it'll be a useful addition for me.

sylvie, I love the sandals too! Pairing brown and black goes a long way towards making black more wearable for me in casual situations.

I think you made the right choice. Black is easy to style and the cut and everything suits you. I love your jeans outfits....you really rock jeans too and wear them well. I am taking note and might copy a couple of outfits.
