My Experiment with Wide Leg Pants

I have worn and loved the long over lean look for several years but have been curious about the new silhouette in pants and tops. Two days ago, I bought these Anthro culottes and yesterday I tried them with my black tee neck and toppers. I have been looking at the photos I took and trying to analyze what I can do to make this new style work for me. Are the pants too wide, too long, wrong color, wrong fabric.? I know that the column of color works for me and it's hard to find blues that work together. Maybe I should try black pants? Different shoes? Shorter toppers? Any suggestions would be welcome.

The outfits all look pretty good, especially #3 and #4. However, I think that the pants need to be at least 2" shorter, but don't know if the hemming is possible with that released hem. I also think the outfits would be more conventionally flattering with shorter toppers, hipbone or shorter. The longer toppers you have here work too, but is more of a fun and different look.

I really like these looks on you, Bonnie. I think you've got it down. These cropped wide-legs look current and chic in these outfits. The silhouette is in proportion with your frame. I especially like all the open-jacket looks and adore #6 with the bit of A-line look on top. The tunic in 7 is a bolder move, in my opinion, a just-flattering-enough look, whereas the others are more conventionally flattering, giving you that long line down the front where the toppers are open.

I love these jeans on you, Bonnie. I've been wondering how they look - have been spying them for myself. Personally, I love them the length they are. I think they are perfect with your boots, and I love looks 3 and 4 in particular. I do think that it would be great to see the pants with some shorter tops, as Tanya suggests and in keeping with what Angie wrote today about the trend of shorter tops, although this is a flattery challenge for me personally. You'll probably look marvelous.

My favorites are #3 - #6, and although the jeans are pictured in the stock photo as shorter than yours, I think the length of yours is fine. I like the shorter/tucked tops with blazers and think they work with this silhouette.

Love these pants on you. I tend to prefer the slimmer toppers with the pants, but that is my personal preference, and not necessarily a fashion savvy perspective. Probably through the lense of how I would wear them.

I like the way you have styled them and think you look great. How do they look without a jacket? Will you wear them that way? I'm not a good judge of length as I like longer for myself.

I am not a specialist for new style and proportion but I like you tried that and love #3 and#6 the best. I don't know how you will shorten the culottes, I will rather try with shorter topper, just suggestion if you like to change something.

Firecracker: You're right, the open jacket look does seem to work for me. I'm not really following Angie's formula, am I? I need to try the pants with short tops and toppers, but I don't have any.

viva: Short tops and toppers are a big flattery challenge for me, too. If only I was two inches taller.......

texstyle: Excellent observation. No, I would not wear the t neck tucked in with the pants. I need to find a top I would wear and that is the challenge.

Mirjana: #3 and #6 are probably my favorites, too. Short toppers don't work with my short waist so I only have one that I never wear.

I love the culottes and the graduated colors! I like pics #3 to #5 because they aren't overwhelming in volume and they are open in the middle, creating that narrow column Angie talks about and highlighting the waist.

The new culotte pants are fab on you Bonnie! Angie has spoken on the length, which I think will be great and I love how you styled them. My faves of the bunch are 2,4,5 and 6.

Bonnie, for what its worth I prefer the tucked in turtleneck and I think you look great in the denim jacket. Its actually my favorite look. To my eye you look like you are drowning in the other toppers. Of course taking 2 inches off the length of the pants may change that. And I absolutely love your hair! Gorgeous.

I really like these on you bonnie. I especially Ike 6, and I think 7 is my least favorite. Tough call on the length, perhaps shortening them would look better, but it would ruin the look of these pants. So I say work with it :). I'm following this with interest as I have a pair of similar culottes on these way to me. I also have a similar issue with shorter tops. With me it's not needing to be 2 inches taller, but 2 inches narrower. The IT shoulders make me look like a box if the length is not there.

I like the length of your jeans and prefer mine the same way. The tucked-in turtleneck satisfies the shorter top 'rule' and the long slim toppers look great because you left them open so we can see where your waistline is. My eye likes the slim toppers more than the A-line toppers with this style of pants. And picture #1, the juicy red coat over the dark column- LOVE!

I love the dark footwear with these looks, but would love to see a sleeker, less chunky tall shaft boot on you.

Great looks Bonnie. These remind me of the pic from Angie's post about the short crossbody. The model had on culottes with a long topper. I like the length of your pants but shorter would be good. Unfortunately you would lose the cool hem detail. Love your Fly London booties.

I really like these on you with the longer open straight toppers and the tucked turtleneck, as well as with the denim jacket. #4 is my absolute favourite. I do think they might be shortened a little bit but that might ruin the hem detail, so it's a tough call. I know that I wear mine a little bit on the long side as well. I like what Joy said -- you've taken the trend and adapted it to your own style in a very thoughtful way.

#4 and #6 are my favorites - and absolutely show the appeal of the new wider jeans. I find the last two interesting, I'm not sure which I prefer and it might be that my eye is adapting to the new widths.

My first reaction was Wow! I really like these looks, with favourites being 1-6. I can see Tanya and Angie's point about hemming but I still think that they look great as is the way you have styled them.

mtnsofthemoon: Thank you. These pants are going to make me do a lot of shopping to make them work, but if they are the wave of the future I want to try to make them work. After I shorten them, I'll shop for shorter tops and toppers.

Style Fan: Thank you. The Fly London boots are so comfortable. I wanted a style of boot more refined than the boots I usually wear but still a bit edgy and these seemed to fill that need.

Suz: Thank you. Pinterest photos showed a lot of longer toppers with this style pant in their street style photos. I decided to use that as my inspiration because that's what I already have. I'm retired and feel free to be creative with my outfits and am having fun with this challenge.

shevia: Thank you. I wore #8 shopping at our town's upscale shopping center and got several compliments. Then when I came out of the dressing room wearing the new pants, #7, two very fashionably dressed friends convinced me that my outfit looked fab. But this happened at Anthropologie so .......

I love these jeans and I really like how you ironed a pleat into them at the front.
The length of the pants looks good to me.
I do prefer the tunic with the skinnier pants as they both seem to have the same level of casualness.
