My favorite aspect of style is color. I think about it a lot, and it's the first thing I respond to when I see someone else's outfit. The latest thing I've been thinking about is wearing more than one color at once. Specifically, wearing more than one non-neutral at once. Seeing MaryK's post, where she does it so beautifully, motivated me to start a thread about it.

Because---I just can't do it. I'm very interested in doing it, open to doing it, wanting to do it, but I can't. I'm fascinated when people wear marine blue with sea green, or crimson with cobalt. I remember when Angie wore citron with turquoise, or very recently, soft blue with apple green. I love it all, but when I even think about it for myself I make a face. The idea of adding on color makes me feel garish, heavy, and not put together.

Here are recent color schemes for me:

  1. Burgundy, cream, and brown
  2. Deep bluish green, black, and white
  3. Black, gray, and hot pink
  4. Cobalt, black, and white
  5. Sage, navy, and cream
  6. Blackened purple with gray
  7. Ink blue with taupe
You get the idea. They are fine color combinations, but they only involve one "color" paired with one or two neutrals.

Here are some hypotheses for my issue. I have no idea which if any are right.

  1. There's some principle of color mixing that I don't understand.
  2. There's something about my coloring that doesn't work with multiple colors.
  3. There's something about my intrinsic personality that doesn't work with multiple colors.
  4. I have hangups about looking colorful.
What do you think? Do you feel comfortable wearing more than one color?
