I know I'm in the minority on YLF, but I absolutely LOVE theatrical, over the top runway shows. More importantly, I loved seeing the blast of color from these shows. I feel satiated

I don't know that I represent the YLF majority, Maya, but my motto on fashion is generally "Give me something I can use."

I did, however, love the color combinations in the Lakme show!

I think you do April, so I don't anticipate too many replies to this thread. The wearable collections are my least favorite, but I seem to be the only one who feels that way. I just don't see the point in going to a "wearable" fashion show when I can walk into Bloomingdales any day of the week!

Thanks for posting these glorious pictures, Maya. I savoured every outfit. They are all KILLER to the power of KILLER.

I too love OTT runway shows. The operative word here is *show*. The sky has to be the limit on a catwalk. It's kind of the point. But I enjoy seeing the less OTT shows too. I guess I just love it all - and I am the one in the minority here, not you.

I can see this as a cocktail dress.

I really enjoyed the collections of Nachiket Barve and Nandita Thirani. They both have cute outfits that can be worn as is or statement pieces that can be combined with other clothes. Really gorgeous!

actually, a lot of the stuff in the Indian fashion week isn't meant to be "just for the runway"--those are the outfits that fashion-forward wealthy urban Indians will wear to weddings (their own and others').

oh yeah, Maya, definitely. But one of the knocks against Indian designers by fashion insiders in the west is that they only make fancy but unoriginal special occasion wear and aren't avant garde enough, so it was a bit surprising to me to see all of it lumped as "only for the catwalk".

I'm not familiar with the criticism. Interesting. I like all of it. I still consider a lot of the special occasion stuff to be along the lines of Georges Chakra. Not unwearable by any stretch, but still fantastical enough to keep it from being boring. I mean these are NOT clothes you'd see every day.

Love it! The Lakme stuff is beautiful, IMO. The Chinese is fabulously mod. Both fantastic in totally different ways. It's art not "clothes".

Some of those fabrics and colors are mind-blowing! I also quite enjoy that the Indian models seem to actually have hips and bust lines, and they still make the clothes look good, amazing, huh?

Although the standard for beauty in India is changing somewhat with Westernization, the "ideal" woman still has some curves. I find the concept of cross-cultural beauty fascinating - when I spent three months in India with my tall blonde blue-eyed friend, who is model potential in the US, she started feeling too lanky, pale and thin in India - people kept asking me if she was "poorly"!

This is so great! I actually thought the Indian one didn't seem all that over the top at all. The one from China, however, definitely was, which is why I loved it. I adore the accordion pants!

I LOVE pretty much all of the China pictures, and many from Lakme because they are NOT trying to be wearable. I can see them as art, and appreciate them as art. It's when the fashion week clothes try to be wearable, or even border on wearable, that I stop seeing them as art and start using a more discriminating eye in terms of what I would actually wear, or at least could use as inspiration. I guess I still see fashion and art as somewhat distinct areas, even though I know for many they are not.

Glad you're feeling the Mondo love, Barbara. His looks are the only ones in PR history that I have ever actually wanted to copy and wear myself. I am all over that Jackie O look (which was really the ONLY good look shown that day, IMO). Wish I could hire him to make me that cute stripey top.

loved looking through the China Fashions. I do have to say that one guy with the wine cork necklace isn't looking like he's very happy with his outfit
