Outerwear Temptations (including Angie's Picks) - UPDATED w/ photos - advice needed!

Now that I've eliminated one of my leather jacket contenders and have opened up the budget (and, let's be real, now that NAS is ending and I'm worried about FOMO), I'm curious about some of the other coats in the sale. I live in Michigan, where we have a long winter, and our coats are often the only things people see us in. My lifestyle is casual, I'm 5'1, and don't like to define my waist so I think all these would work. I have a great, seriously utilitarian coat for the coldest of days, so with this one I'm looking to mix it up style-wise, to be useful on days I'm just running around town, jumping from car to shop or the like.

I'm wondering if anyone has any impressions or real-life experience with any the following.

Mackage Water Repellent Down Jacket - love the subtle tartan print and looks good on the functionality front, too. Angie's pick.

Pendleton Pearl Coat - may not be heavy enough for real winter but I like the classic Pendleton styling and loden color. Worried it may be limiting regarding outfits and less polished than the others. Angie's pick.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Faux Vest and Parka - The wild card. Maybe it's capturing my imagination because I just had success with the brand and also because of the 2-in-1 feature and trendy fur vest/hood. It's also a color that is nothing like I own for winter. Not an Angie's pick, but I don't know if it's because it didn't pass muster or just wasn't seen in real life.

PHOTOS: First four are obviously the DL styled for winter (1-3) and late fall (4). The last two (5-6) are the Mackage. Which do you prefer, and does the Mackage look like I should size down? (Still waiting for Pendleton to arrive.)

Seen them all and fitted them onto clients.

1. Best puffer at the NAS.

2. Can't go wrong with Pendleton outerwear if the fit is right and the wool isn't scratchy.

3. A stunning item until I noticed the real fur, and I don't include real fur in my roundups. But if that's not an issue for you - try it.

NOTE: the sleeves are long and you'll need to have them altered.

I saw the Derek lam in person, tried it on, and let me tell you, it is amazing.

...But weird.

Because it is insulated through the body but the sleeves are not insulated at all.

There was also an amazing VEST Jules. Navy. Gorgeous, but again, major seasonal confusion. Maybe you could wear a puffer or thick sweater under it though.

I don’t normally gravitate towards this camel/Toffee colour but I had to try it on because it just had a certain something.

Oh yah, I also tried in the Mackage puffer. I loved it too. Very straight, and very puffy. But still streamlined. (I’m pretty sure Angie says as much in her writeup.)

The issue is that it is a winter weight coat that is much more practical at a longer length. I felt that the shorter length was quite a sporty, preppy look, vs. an elegant look.

I didn’t see the Pendleton. (We didn’t stock any Pendleton at my local store, darn!)

I don't think the Canadian Nordstrom stores stock Pendleton but you can order from Pendleton online in Canada.

A coat with no lining in the sleeves? AND real fur on the hood?? Seasonal confusion to the max!! But it's gorgeous!

I live in the south with short, moderate winters but I want that Mackage puffer! I love it in the plaid.

Angie - where is the real fur? The online description only references faux fur! I'm not sure if that's a dealbreaker or not. Will have to mull.

Smittie/Suz - seasonal confusion! That's definitely something to consider, but I think "car-to-shop" short hops might mitigate that. Same with the short puffer. Great for car, less so for longer stretches (and truth be told, I'm so short it will likely cover my bum). Where is navy vest of which you speak, smittie?

The fur on the vest is faux, but the fur on the collar is real. I can't remember which animal though - fox, maybe?

That's funny, because if you look at the description now, it makes no mention of real fur. I do seem to remember it saying real fur in the past, though.

I really like the Pendleton. I would have ordered it if I didn’t have the blue and black one from a couple years ago. And this one has a hood!

I've had a chance to do a quick try-on of the Derek Lam and the Mackage (the Pendleton was sold out until just yesterday and it's now on the way). I didn't try on either fully styled, but here are my initial impressions.

Mackage - I was a little misled by the sizing information. While it does say to size down if between sizes, the L is for 8-10, which is exactly what I am, and it was too big. It was also heavier than I expected, which is great for my climate, but a little bulky for running in and out of the car doing errands and the like. I also wasn't crazy about the bright silver zipper. Still debating whether to reorder a size down.

Derek Lam - Angie is correct that the hood is real fur. I don't think it's a deal-breaker for me. Neither is the "seasonally confused" aspect of the unlined sleeves, as I would always wear it with sweater/cashmere layers and don't plan to be in the elements long in this coat. The M fit well and the color suited me more than I expected and I like how the fit is adjustable through draw cords. I haven't tried removing the vest to see it on its own but it seems oddly long with deep armholes and may not end up working.

I'll try to get some photos up later.

I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to the Mackage jacket because I thought it was black. But it’s plaid! It looks like Black Watch! What I’ve been wanting. I must not order it.

I just updated this post with styled photos and a request for advice. My initial concerns about the Mackage are gone, except for the sizing. Does it look too big? The DL is very versatile and I'm not concerned about its usefulness but it is a lot more jacket and it might be too much. All advice appreciated, thanks!

Mackage looks like you could size down one size, the sleeves look too long/big. I love the Derek Lam on you, I like that tan color on you more than the black. Doesn't look like too much jacket to me, although the sleeves could be too long per Angie's comment.
