My husband got me these very cool sunglasses in San Francisco as a Christmas present. It took a while to get my prescription installed, and then to get custom nose pads put on as well (many frames sit on my cheeks without nosepads so I have to have them added to pretty much every pair I get, if they’re already not part of the style and if they work with the frame). It was a tricky customization because this style (made by an Italian company called Movitro), swivels at the center so that when you fold the arms in for storage, they actually protect the lenses. We loved the blue color and the dark metal hardware! I now have a really good variety of sunglasses frames that I’m thrilled to wear. These are not super strong as far as sun protection is concerned — they won’t be for more rugged use like hiking, but more city wear. I have two other pairs that serve my more active/outdoorsy times.

New regular eyeglass frames are being made for me now too — they’ll take a while, but I wanted to also have another pair of updated frames for my regular lenses. They’re by a company called February 31, and take a while to make. The frames are made from multiple very thin layers of wood, and I chose a custom combination of blue, grey, and a silvery tone. I wanted them to be mostly neutral but with a bit of one of my signature colors (blues and greens). Blue felt the most versatile so that’s what I chose.

Glasses are often hard for me to find — many are too wide for my small head, and I alap want something with some personality — however, it can be hard to find the right balance between distinctive and *too much* for me. So I’m excited to have a couple of current frames and hope they last me for years. My prescription seems pretty stable and has been for years now, so hopefully I can keep the same lenses for a while.
