More Leith pant sadness

I was so excited to wear my Leith track pants today for the first time! I felt great in the pants, my cobalt mesh Gap sweater, and cognac booties. Happiness factor: 100%!

...until, halfway to my bus stop, I looked down and noticed a large tear in the middle of the fabric of the calf of the right-hand pant leg. I hadn't even been wearing them for 30 minutes by that point. I have no idea how it could have happened. All I did was put them on, make my coffee, and leave the house. Luckily I caught it in time to race back home and change into my FFB pants, my Gap Really Skinnies.

Not sure what to do since I don't have the receipt for the pants and am in Canada (a wonderful YLFer mailed them to me and I reimbursed her for the cost of the pants + shipping via PayPal).

Very very sad pants times here in the Ariadne house.

Oh no! I could have sworn I saw a similar post earlier ...some time in the last week, where someone else had experienced a rip in the Leith pants.

Aww....this is no fun, especially since they can't easily be returned. Is the tear on a seam that can be repaired?

This makes me sad, reading this - such fab-looking pants, and to have something like that happen upon first wearing is a real let down.

I'd almost be tempted to write to the manufacturer. I have no idea if this is possible, but I wonder if the brand itself has a site or something where you could e-mail them and tell them what happened?

eta: I just looked up "Leith" to see if they had a website, and I think this is a Nordstrom store brand. If I were you, I might be tempted to write to Nordstrom and see what they have to say.

Oh, no! The same thing happened to Cinnamon Fern! I really don't think these are much better than F21 quality, and that's too bad. I'm sorry and hope it can be fixed.

Yes, it happened to cinnamon ferm earlier this week (hence the MORE in my thread title) :(. The tear in mine is not on a seam so it's definitely not reparable, at least not in an unnoticeable way.

I will write to Nordstrom, I think, on Thursday when I have some time. Nothing to lose, anyway.

Una, I think you're right about the quality. I had such big plans for these pants. DRAMATIC SIGH.

Oh, that's too bad! I think you should let Nordstrom know. They are usually stand behind their merchandise and need to know that there is a problem with these pants.

Oh no! Sounds like that polyester fabric has a lot of shear to it and splits under stress.

Please know you can send them back to me for return -- I know Nordstrom will take them back and credit my account, so I can reimburse you.

Oh no!! Wow -- the quality control on these must be simply terrible! I haven't worn mine yet because it is far too cold here. But now I'm quaking at what might happen when I do! I wonder what the heck is going on. It might be that the weight of the zipper pulls on the fabric or something.

Oh no! These are not the best made pants. I ended up calling Nordstrom, and they found another pair in an Arizona store that they're sending me. Now I'm wondering if I should have just returned them ...

The tear on mine was also on the calf, parallel to the top of the zipper - so what Suz suggested, or just that the low calf is the only place they're at all tight.

I'm sorry you ended up with such a rushed morning!

I would email Nordstrom, send a photo, and tell them exactly what happened. Tell them you wore those pants for less than 30 minutes, doing mundane stuff. Mention -politely - that you researched online and found other people are experiencing the same issue with the brand. And see if they can do anything for you. I think Nordstrom has such a good reputation for quality and customer service, I think (hope) they will try and make things right, rather than risk their reputation.

I have two pairs of these pants and LOVE them, so I have been interested and concerned to read about the quality issues with the fabric splitting like this. I just got off the phone with a customer service rep at Nordstrom and described the problem that YLF forum posters have been experiencing. She said that the company needs to be made aware of manufacturing issues like this and will pass it on. She also took the time to look into if there had been internal notes about problems with these pants and didn't see anything previously noted anywhere. She said that Nordstrom will accept returns and provide refunds at any time for poor performance of items.

I am still unhappy to know that I have to keep a very close eye on the wear and tear of these pants now (what if the fabric splits on the butt like this?), but at least I know we can get a refund if they do eventually rip/split. I will have to keep my eyes out for something similarly affordable, washable and of better lasting quality that I can replace these with if this does turn out to be a general issue with the fabric of these particular pants. It is a bummer.

Thanks Claudia, on behalf of Leith pant owners and soon to be owners on YLF! I'm glad to know it's not a known problem, there could have been a freak bad batch of fabric, hopefully it won't happen to all of us. And it's so good to know they'll stand by their product if we do.

Let us know if you find an alternate!! One that's under $300, preferably

What the heck is going on here! I was lamenting my Leith lost opportunity and now to hear this. How weird is that, Ariadne, to have a tear in the fabric for no apparent reason and it's happened more than once.

I do hope you can contact Nordstrom and I'm sure they would take it back somehow, even without a receipt, because they are so new.

Here's to happier times in the Ariadne house this weekend!
