More coat ponderings from the tropics

More work on the coat research/purchasing for the trips to Northern Europe when temps will be mid30s to 40s and 50/50 change of rain. And business casual style. I tried on this lovely wool jacket today - looks great and on sale http://www.sportscraft.com.au/.....0_1001523/

OR I can go with my layering system of thermals, clothes, merino warm 'gear' under a nice rain/wind resistant dressy jacket with a stunning collar. I was a little chilly in my last version of this...

What do you think? The oatmeal looks lovely BUT its a light colour and I am a klutz, and I would have to cart it round.
My system might need some warmth tweaking but I can fold the pieces into my hand luggage, wear parts of it here in the sub tropics in winter etc.
What do you think? Am I living an imaginary life with the glamourous oatmeal coat here...

Jen, stunning coat! I didn't comment on previous post as I haven't travelled in cold environments so not much of value to contribute. I had a cream wool coat in the 90's (Adam Bennett) and I wore it on the train/bus/walking almost 5 days a week in the winter time...and I could not believe how CLEAN it remained! I did have it cleaned regularly but seriously when I retired it, it was because I was sick of it not because the condition had deteriorated. I'm no help as I think every woman should have one glam coat.

Nice! I think it is possible to keep a light colored coat clean -- after all, Angie has a cream trench coat that she has managed to keep pristine for a while now, so it must be possible. Would treating it with waterproofing spray or something like that be an option?

I think it would be fine for your trip - warm and stylish. Also it's not a style that will date quickly in case you need it for another trip. The colour isn't all that light so I wouldn't worry about it looking dirty. We get lots of winter here and I often have a light coloured coat in the mix because I think it gives me a lift when it's gloomy outside.

I love sportscraft coats, they are so warm and light, but when I travel I do not pack a big coat. When in New York during winter I wore a trendy jacket, that was windproof (from an outdoor specialist clothing shop), layered it with sheer merino wool clothing.

The jacket was perfect for travel, rolled up as my pillow on the plane, rolled up to a small space in my suitcase and was warm and comfy when I wore it. The jacket was quite pricey but worth every cent!

Agree it is a gorgeous coat. I think it depends on how dirty the city is where you're traveling. Years ago, I moved to Philadelphia from Southern California, to go to school.
I had a camel's hair coat. Philadelphia was then so dirty that soot would collect on the windowsills in the dorm, in the early autumn when we had windows open. ALL of my light colored coats visited the dry cleaners constantly. Where your sleeve might crinkle up a bit as you wear the garment, I would come back to the dorm with black smears. Soon all the coats were worn out because they had been cleaned so often the pile had worn away on the arms and other prominent wear spots. I do have some camel coats again and don't have a problem these days and if I did I would hand wash them. Yes, I prefer to handwash over dry cleaning. But it sure is easiest to wear at least a medium tone tweed. And if you like color, they always advise painting rooms or laying carpets in blue because it's for some reason the color that shows the dirt least. And medium blue is in now.

Now what a wonderful collection of responses with those with light jacket experience, Aussies travelling to colder climes, and Laurinda you take the cake! (and now I can't wait to get there!) My mind is made up - I will take my layering outfits and keep a picture of this lovely coat. Laurinda and Jen my stuff will fit in perfectly here in Copenhagen (it looks lovely!) but ok to carry via Bangkok or Singapore which will be way hot!!!! Lovely others, again thank you!

I love the coat, but I fear the color, to be honest. I had one light coat in my entire life, would never go back. Unless you don't mind bringing it to the cleaners the minute you spot a spot.

If you can find a classic and beautiful coat like this in a more stain-friendly color (charcoal, brown, blue) I'd go for it. Jet black is better than cream or camel but still shows stains and pet hair more than charcoal or blue.

Thanks Cocolion - I went to the store to get the bluey fleck one and it just didnt sing to me alas but I like the idea of it.... Where have I been? Alas tres busy at work - which is lots of fun with lovely people and someone offering to fly me to Copenhagen for a few days I am fortunate to have such a privileged life - at the expense of playing online at the moment alas!
