More 2010-2018 trends you may have enjoyed (I did)

Following on I have been thinking of some other trends from the last decade

- peep toe booties
- hi low tops
- hi low dresses
- Fitted sheath dresses
- kimono topper
- maxi dresses
- cropped moto jackets

I wore all these trends. And loved them! I had a few maxi dresses and fitted sheaths. One hi low dress but several tops. One leather fitted moto and one pair of sandal or peep toe booties. Two kimono style toppers - one which I wear and one is in the holding zone.

I still wear fitted sheaths and my hi low dress. All the others have worn out or been edited out - but mostly they wore out from good wear!

Fitted sheaths are definitely part of my style and I feel good in them if they are below my knee. I will wear them as long as I love them. I like the kimono in summer with jeans. I am not actively looking for the other trends but still like them.

I think fitted moto jackets are definitely a classic now.

Sal, thanks for another fun post! Fab to go down memory lane with you, AND isolate what is trendless for our styles.

I wore them ALL apart from the casual maxi dresses and kimono toppers. I'm devoted to midis

No longer wearing:

sheath dresses
peep-toe booties

Still wearing and LOVE:

hi-low tops
hi-low dresses/skirts
hi-low toppers too

Don't see any of it as dated.

I've been calling the tailored moto jacket an iconic classic for ages. Along with All Star Converse, the original Docs, Stan Smith sneakers, fitted denim trucker jackets, straight narrow jeans that don't look like jeggings with a mid-rise, tank tops, parkas, the 2.55, black riding boots.......

My peep-toe booties in 2011 - (back when I wore heels) - and my favourite jeans of all time. Don't miss my heel wearing days. But do I EVER miss those jeans. I still have them - completely worn through and threadbare.

I wore (and loved) all of these trends except for the maxi dress. I probably would have worn one of those, too, but they are a pain for me to find in an appropriate length and I wouldn't have worn it often enough to pay a seamstress to hem.

Why can't I find a photo of my ubiquitous peep toe booties? I wore those babies ALL the time!!

Yeah, I got into the peep toe booties, hi-low tops and dresses, and messed around with sheath dresses and motos. I’m even more into sheath dresses now and am really off peep-toe... all my booties are too high! I’ve gone flat shoe totally. Also, I learned I’m more aviation jacket than moto...

Yep, wore several of these trends.

I wore peep toe booties. Had the one pair in baby blue suede with a stacked wooden heel. Loved them, still have them, and would still wear them, if they suited the outfit and occasion. However, I wouldn't buy any more of that style.

I still have a wonderful high low tunic that I bought many moons ago in Iceland and that I would definitely still wear.

And I have several cropped moto jackets, also many years old, taking up space in my coat closet. I haven't worn them in years, but I have no plans to get rid of them anytime soon, especially the bright orange one!

What a fun topic. I have enjoyed ( and still enjoy) several of these, especially high-low hems. I occasionally wear a couple of pairs of peep toes although they are on their way out but they are a bit dressier than casual flats.
Fitted sheath dresses were a good dress for me but no longer work out very well. I still wear kimono style jackets. Same with cropped jackets. It they are not getting much wear. I have not worn maxi dresses. Most are too bare on top, probably to compensate for all the fabric at the bottom.

Oh, and I did have a wonderful high low dress from Karen Kane that I absolutely adored. If I still had it, I would definitely still be wearing it. Unfortunately, it was stolen from my hotel room in Virginia Beach—this was 6-8 years ago, I think—and I was never able to replace it, sob! Believe me I tried. I just hope whoever got it, took it because they admired it and wore the heck out it!

I agree Angie - midis are definitely you!! And fun to see those photos. And I see all those pieces as classic too.

And Suz, I remember those looks - and your peep toe booties. I had a pair I was totally devoted to and reluctantly edited out when completely worn.

Rachy - brilliant. I love sheaths too, I am more bomber than moto. But I work in aviation so I can't really wear that look..

In fact there are a couple of others I should have mentioned
- waterfall jackets or cardigans (I dabbled)
- bomber jackets (yes please!)

I'm 5/7 on this list No maxis or kimonos for me in those years. I wear kimonos now though but don't think I have ever, ever worn a maxi dress. Regarding peep toes: I've gone from loving them - THEN - to having somewhat of a poison eye for them now. And oh, the ubiquitous waterfall lapel. It was, and still is, everywhere !

I wore and loved most of them. I've bid farewell to sheath dresses and pencil skirts. The business bombshell days are behind me. I only had one pair of peep toe booties that I loved. Too bad my feet didn't love them. I had one kimono topper but ended up donating it. Just didnt fit my personal style very well. Hi-lo tops and dresses, maxi dresses and especially moto jackets are wardrobe mainstays. If you live long enough, you will see everything and wear most of it too.

- peep toe booties—Tried this trend, but never really got it. Mark it as a fail
- hi low tops —one of my all time favs...still wearing
- hi low dresses —not really dress person, so have to say i passed on this one, do i have an in even hem dress thought
- Fitted sheath dresses —wore this a lot, but back in the 80s/90s, the middle of the 90s i was completely over this
- kimono topper- no, this wasn’t/ isn’t me...

I second Suz’s first comment Sally. Here’s my take:

Peep toe booties. Yes. Any sandal bootie is a yes for me. The mix of boots + sandals is truly intoxicating I would still wear them but I’m off heels now. So any further purchases would have to be flat or almost flat.

Hi-low tops. Yes. And I’d still wear as long as they weren’t too exaggerated. But I prefer a curved hem top that is symmetrical back and front.

Hi-low dresses. I don’t think I had any. I’m more a curved hem or asymmetrical hem skirt/dress person.

Sheath dresses. Yes but not lately due to WFH. I still wear fitted pencil skirts in midi length. I’m off my knee length pencil skirts because they feel too business like. I have retained a few to cover change in mood/circumstances.

Kimono. No.

Maxi dresses. Yes. But I prefer a midi now.

Moto jackets. Yes. I have a few and still really love them.

Bomber jacket. No.

Waterfall jacket/cardigan. Yes. I’ve passed on one I had that was a more exaggerated version but still have a couple that are more subtle (and would still wear).

And here’s a few more suggestions on trends that many people here at YLF seemed to love, and there’s at least one here* that I went overboard on:

Guitar strap bags
Gilets/long vests
Mixed media tops and jackets
Boyfriend jeans
Floral****
Harem pants
Cape style jackets
Culottes

Of your trends I certainly wore boyfriend jeans, floral ***** and culottes ***** !! I actually love guitar strap bags and I really like the idea of a cape too. I would wear sandal boots or peeptoe boots again I think. I remember buying them wondering if I would get much wear out of them and then they became an instant go to. I replaced them with sandals that I like- but not as much as those peeptoe boots.

kkards - I think most of your trends would be in footwear and denim?

nuancedream - peeptoe sandals did look better with a mid heel didn't they!! And yes it is fun to see things revolve in and out.

Lisa - waterfall cardigans were a bit too ubiquitous for a while- I think because they covered the butt in the skinny jeans:)

Kate - what a shame about your dress! But it sounds like you bought trendy pieces that are true to your personal style so they still work. That is exactly how it should be.

Joy - i think hi-low tops are a classic now and they really do work well with different bottoms. Maxi dresses are mostly very skimpy up top - I kept looking for a stylish 70s option for winter and never found one.

Great work digging up what made the teens the teens!
Peep toe booties - loved, my first major Angie recommended splurge were a pair that I wore to the ground. They had a small and comfortable wedge but I don't think I could wear them anymore.
Sheath dresses - perhaps a bit but not really.
Hi lo dresses - pretty sure that is a yes, but not sure I have any now.
Maxi dress - not for short me
Cropped moto - cropped military yes, but not moto - yet. I would still consider the right one.

I probably missed a few but I am enjoying these immensely.

I agree with Suz on your posts, Sal.

Most of these styles are so not me. I hope the one that is—sheath dresses—sticks around in a classic rock kind of way. I could never wear pencil skirts though.

In your other post, we commented that millennium pink was a thing in decor and fashion. It’s funny to me that “waterfall” showed up in both both places too, with pretty much opposite meanings. I like how waterfall cardis mess with strict boundaries and avoid sharp edges. Waterfall countertops, however are the opposite and don’t appeal to me.

Simple aviator jackets work much better for me than motos.

There are several of these that I would have worn but never found the right one for me - maxi dresses and kimono come to mind. I had one pair of peep toe booties that weren't very comfortable so I passed them on but I would still wear a flat version. I like motos but only have one and it hasn't been worn much lately. I wore sheath dresses back in my early work days but they really aren't me. Fun to think about these.

Another great list, Sal! Let's see - I tried (and quickly passed on) peep toe booties, and kimono. I don't like the way my toes look in a peep toe anything, and I would try a kimono again, if I found the right one, maybe. I have two maxi length t-shirt dresses that have been mostly loungewear/WFH wear. I find the length suffocating, so I probably won't replace them.

I have a moto that I absolutely love, but don't think it's cropped (hits around the hip). Anything cropped can quickly look like I shrunk my clothes... I would definitely add a bomber jacket if I found one I loved.

I have a decade-old+ black knee-length sheath dress as my
conservative/dressy/funeral piece, but won't buy more. I've almost
passed it on so many times in favor of pants, but it fits SO WELL.

Yes to all of these:
- hi low tops
- hi low dresses
- Fitted sheath dresses (these aren't great for my body type, but I've worn)
- kimono topper
- maxi dresses
- cropped moto jackets
- waterfall jackets or cardigans (I also dabbled)
- Boyfriend jeans
- Floral
- Harem Pants

No to:
- peep toe booties
- bomber jackets
- Guitar strap bags
- Gilets/long vests
- Mixed media tops and jackets
- Cape style jackets

I pretty much LIKE everything in the no list here, though, and I'd still wear many of these. Interesting.

Wearing a maxi dress today, cause dr appts. Never the very skimpy on top sort though that was the most popular. Sheath dresses yes for business formal- when I need that again. Still have a couple pairs of peep toes- though one is platform and not trendy. Had hi low tops and a kimono topper too. Would wear kimono again, if it suited my climate.

I had one draped cascading cardigan back in 2010. Passed it on to DFS because I'm not a cardigan gal. Live and learn.

I have one bomber jacket. I don't wear them that well. Don't have the real estate to fill out the silhouette - and to my eye they look better when they are filled out with shoulders/bust, or both. I do like them though!

Suntiger - thanks for chiming in. Kimonos I thought might suit your climate as a way of adding a very light layer that is still breezy?

Jenn- I think this list was less "trendy" and more current. I like all of these things done well too. Waterfall cardigans became one of those looks that was just too popular here for a short period. I still have a jacket though.

NemosMom - I could see you in a kimono - probably a longer one. I would quite like a dramatic one if I could find the perfect pattern. I like the dresses in your finds.

Robin - funny - I loved peeptoe booties and found them very comfortable. I could see you in a kimono too!!

Fashintern - I could see you a kimono too!! Definitely a boho vibe. I don't know a waterfall countertop - but I do agree that the waterfall cardigan drape can work really well.

Shevia - thanks for chiming in. You were not the only one to fall for the peeptoe bootie. In NZ they really suit the climate for a lot of the year.

Actually when I look at my cream jacket (find below) it is not really waterfall at all!!

peep toe booties: I had a pair, but never wore them. That's TERRIBLE. I need to stop buying things that aren't right for me!

hi low tops: I still wear these fairly often. LOVE them!

hi low dresses: Had one, wore it for a season

Fitted sheath dresses: These are classic, forever

Kimono topper: I had one and I still have one. I didn't wear it much originally, but I can't seem to part with it.

maxi dresses: There's only one I have that I still really love. I still wear it.

cropped moto jackets: Never went in for the cropped style, but moto jackets are forever!

Sal, funny you mention a kimono for me. I picked one out at Anthropologie last year, thought my mom was getting it for me for my birthday, so I stopped looking. She sent the package, but it was returned to sender TWICE. I just recently asked about the kimono. It has apparently gone missing. So now I'm in the market for a kimono, because I think you're right that it'd work well for me.

I like the idea of kimonos, but our summers are 90s and humid, and sleeves would get soaked with sweat in about 2 minutes outside. They'd be nice for in the office with a/c when I have to go back there (kicking and screaming), but my outfit beneath would have to be stand alone for when I go out.

The wide sleeves make them impossible to layer over, so they don't work for colder weather.
They'd be perfect for the 60-70 degree range, but that rarely happens here. Lots of things would be perfect for that range--wish that was my winter!
