Monday holidays: who has plans?

This Monday is lots of things: Memorial Day, Whit Monday, Spring Bank Holiday, Reconciliation Day and so on. Anyone have anything planned?

Here on the US East coast, Monday is supposed to be warm (mid-80s) and dry. Mr. A and I will probably turn on the spa heater and spend some time in the bubbles. He and his brother will visit their dad (an army veteran) in the morning.

This year, I bought one of those special deviled-egg storage/serving things and have promised to make 2023 "the summer of deviled eggs."

I loathe eating any dish that involves boiled eggs but Mr. A's entire family adores such things and I don't mind preparing these dishes, especially since I learned how to do "hard-boiled eggs" in the air fryer. So I'll probably send a batch of deviled eggs along with Mr. A to his dad and perhaps we'll grill something here for dinner.

I spent last Saturday (Armed Forces Day) sobbing my way through Saving Private Ryan - again - and thus may give myself a break from the horrors of war this weekend.

Saving Private Ryan was sooooo good. If you like war movies and shows - I have some suggestions.

It will be a perfect mild, dry, and sunny 22C here on Monday. I suspect Greg and I will spend more time planning our remodel.

I sobbed through Saving Private Ryan when it came out in 1998 and I had a one-year-old son. Devastating then, devastating now.

A more fun film revisit for me last week was The Turning Point, from 1977. How much do we miss Ann Bancroft? If you haven't seen this movie, it's worth watching just to see the opening credits: "And introducing... Mikhail Baryshnikov".

Oh, I loved The Turning Point! Can’t do violence due to nightmares so I haven’t seen Saving Private Ryan.

We are gearing up for the garden and re-watching the past Raiders movies in anticipation of the last installment of that series starring Harrison Ford.

No plans for the rest of the weekend, but yesterday was the last day with kids at school (hurray!) and I went to see my mum for her birthday today. It is Memorial Day weekend here, so I bought poppies from a veteran outside the grocery store and thanked him for his service. I just got my bike out and ready to ride and will probably take it for a spin tomorrow (and then deal with a sore bum for the next three days until I get used to it again).

And deviled eggs ROCK. If you have any creative recipes, post them!

Instant Pots are also great for boiled eggs that are both perfectly cooked and peel perfectly every time. I went through a fancy devilled egg phase years ago incorporating things like smoked salmon, toasted sesame seeds, etc. I liked to do two versions for parties - classic and something more interesting. It’s less effort than doing two different appetizers but satisfies different palates!

PS our Canadian long weekend was last week. No plans as we had mild Covid, but doing nothing other than some gardening was very relaxing.

What Jules said re: Victoria Day long weekend in Canada. However, Friday DH left for his annual golf week that he has been doing for 30+/- years, so I’m on my annual gardening marathon, Monday included.

The very old St. Bartholomew’s church (#1) in Cambridgeshire, UK where we attended a wedding last weekend has a stained glass window dedicated to the 600 Canadian airmen who flew out of the nearby Bourne airfield and perished during WWII. They flew Bombers and Pathfinders. The vicar volunteered that the locals dedicate a Sunday service in May to the airmen, and sing the Canadian national anthem. There was a display of red and white roses on the sill of the window in this old church.

It touched a nerve for DH whose father (#2) was in the RAF and came over from the UK to train in Canada

I love devilled eggs and egg salad sandwiches are my favourite!

Will skip the deviled eggs- but taking advantage of in season asparagus and strawberries these days!
I'm working this weekend, cause I prefer to be off when I have the pool and the river to myself Tonight after work DH and I will go see Marine FIL, who hasn't been well lately.

Working all long weekend and unfortunately having trouble with sleep
( some people just love loud talking while saying long goodbyes to their friends - at 1am, at 2am ... ).

slim cat, I hear you (pun intended) - our Party Down neighbors kicked it into high gear around midday on Friday. They typically provide an abundance of noise at all hours from about now until they close their pool in the fall - and then the parties move around the fire pit.

I would mind less if we shared musical tastes but alas.

Last night I went up to the barn so I could turn my own music up loud and drown out whatever thing they were playing.

Incidentally, another dish that can easily be made buffet-style to accommodate many tastes is Salade Nicoise. Just leave all ingredients separate and let people build their own. For me, no eggs, no tuna, extra olives.

Now my dad had to go to hospital too :/ He was at a campout and ate something with THC and he fell. Wasn't labled and no one told him. Grrrrrr!

Oh my, st, that's terrible! My mother frightens me by "just winging it" with THC syrup that a friend gave her. Bottle says place 1 drop under tongue. Mom: "I only took 1/8 teaspoon..."

And why does she wing it? Because she can't read the label. LABELS, people, LABELS.

BTW, YLF, so much for my deviled egg plans. Epic fail. I hard-boiled a dozen eggs and not one of them peeled cleanly enough to be deviled. Instead, it all became egg salad. That air-fryer recipe is waaaaaaay off for my fryer. Consider yourself warned.

Parents :/ I guess this is payback for the dumb things we all did in our teens and twenties :p

He told me he still had the effects over 8 hours later, that's when he went to hospital.

I heard CBD mitigates the psychoactive effect, so you may want to keep it on hand for your mom if she does that again. It does raise eye pressure though, so not recommended for people w glaucoma. Probably charcoal worth a try too.

Bloody hell. My mum is the one who, having been a nurse one hundred years ago, now believes she knows everything about anything health related. Incorrect, Mum, incorrect.

Today she told me she took a half teaspoon of the one-drop THC syrup.

She lives 2000 miles away and does not care to hear my opinion on anything relating to her health/safety so there isn't much I can monitor.

Oh boy! When my mom was in hospital dying we were providing her THC chocolates which helped her anxiety. But yeah, no sense of dosage… chocolates are tasty and if one is good, more must be better?
