I love this thread and here's my contribution. Well done YLF babies (and Marines too)!
My son, who had only started kindergarden in October, had by Christmas learnt German language so well that we actually ask him (5.5 yo) to translate for us.
After several frustrating weeks at the beginning, this is something that not just makes me feel relieved, but very proud too. Most importantly, life is easier for him now. And, when he starts school in September, he won't feel left behind.
It is a very, very weird feeling to not understand what my own child is saying. It is also frightening as we're nowhere near his level of using the new language and we can't shield him from bad things others may say around or to him. So, we must step on it more.
We can't assess how good he is, but form just listening to him and hearing that his sentences simply flow, with no pausing, there's no thinking about words, to us at least he sounds so confident and comfortable. Yes, we've heard it's easy for kids to pick up new languages and yes, he was already bilingual which apparently helps as he's already familiar with the concept of different language, but even our new friends here are shocked by the speed at which he had progressed.
Thanks for listening and thanks for the opportunity to brag. Leaving the spotlight for another proud mum now
