Modern/current 'essential' sweaters for pear/hourglass (x)- generally and specifically?

For an 'essential' basic sweater, e.g. something to wear under a jacket (topper? new to the site and learning the terminology!), what shape is modern, current, but good for pears/hourglass (X, but small-ish bust and short waisted)? Should I stick with colors similar to my jeans or pants, and not worry about the length? Lots of cute sweaters out there, but they all seem to be short enough that they cut across right above my hips, making me look super wide. I love bright colors (I'm pale, and they make me look more awake and alive), but I don't know how to do the layering to make it work.

General advice and/or specific 'finds'/links much appreciated!

Where on the hips are they hitting? High hip near your waistband, or a bit lower? As a fellow pear I find that the overall proportions (i.e. am I wearing the top with full-length pants, cropped pants, or a skirt, etc.) make a big difference. Generally you need a shorter top to go with skirts and a longer to go with trousers/jeans. And yes, a sweater that's a similar color to your bottoms will give you a visually longer look than something that contrasts. The other factor is the length of your jacket/topper - is it longer than your sweater or shorter?

As far as trends Angie is big on fluid fits this fall/winter - looser than body-skimming, but not baggy per se. I'm seeing lots of necklines, but mostly classic shapes - set-in sleeves or raglan, with a few looser cut-on sleeve sweaters out there too.

OK, this reads like a total info-dump, sorry, but one other factor you may wish to investigate is whether your lower body is more of an X or an 8 shape at the hips - that's Imogen at Inside Out Style's terminology and here's one of her blog posts about it:
