moderately successful casual clothes shopping

I've been living for the past 3 months in the same two pairs of jeans. No, I'm not particularly proud of this fact! :p

Anyway, yesterday I took myself to the American Apparel that is practically around the corner from me.

Verdict: Having this store close by will work really well when I need to pick up casual, everyday staples. For pieces more expressive of my personal style - and that suit my body type - I'll have to shop elsewhere.

I did manage to get a lovely pair of stretchy jeans, some black leggings (these ones, I think)

and three tops: one flattering feminine fit and two more ultilitarian unisex vee-neck tees.

I'm so glad Michelle convinced me to come to YLF. I was able to go into the store with a clear idea of what I did and didn't want, and didn't get discouraged when most of the tops didn't suit my adorable apple body. I've never seen so many cropped tops or tees tapered around the waist and hips. I love the clothes-buying confidence I have already.

The salesperson helping me even took a photo for me!

She didn't quite know how to use my phone, so there were several attempts. appologies if there were duplicates.

I bought the jeans I'm wearing here, and the tee, though I decided to get it in a smaller size.

Having a new pair of jeans and leggings will be your foundation for building a bunch of capsules...I bought new jeans and black pants last month and I am having such fun styling them..
Glad you are at YLF, too...This is a great place to work on your style and have fun with fashion, too..

The Vee neck tee really suits you, and the colour is good too. From the camera angle I can't see much of the jeans but I'm sure you had some good advice in the store regarding fit.

MissVee: Actually, no, I got very little useful help in the store as far as finding a flattering fit goes. Everything I walked out of the fitting room in looked "so good!" :p

That's why I was especially happy to have some basic ideas I could use to evaluate the fit myself.

The jeans are slightly tighter in the waist than I otherwise would have liked, but they fit pretty well everywhere else, so I decided not to worry about a little bit of muffin top. I'm getting more fit by the day so that will reduce some over time. Plus, I'm guessing that the right shirt will minimize stomach appearance?

I'm glad the shirt looks good. IN that photo I'm wearing a medium. I decided to switch to a small because I was showing way too much cleavage in the medium any time I bent forward. The small fit surprisingly well. The neckline isn't as low, and the shirt isn't as long on me - both good things, I think.

Thanks all for your feedback. I'll get more pictures for you over the next few weeks. I'm going to visit my family and they may get tired of me asking them to take my picture.

Hi Robin! I have the same issue with most size Medium tops - too much of my (small) bust shows if I lean forward (I don't actually have cleavage, though - LOL!). So I usually size down to Small, which can sometimes be too bit tight through the shoulders for me.

I can also relate to you wearing just the same 2 pairs of jeans for a long period of time. When I found myself wearing the same one pair of jeans every time I left the house because all my other pants had "issues", that was what started me on my style journey - I wanted to have clothes that I would love, feel comfortable in, and would look good on me.

You've done a great job with your shopping, Robin. These are such versatile pieces to start with - you can do a million things with them. Looking forward to seeing more of your outfits!

Robin, love the v neck! I've had the same experience with most of the usual SA's in stores. So much hype; probably they are trained that way, and they really can't serve as an independent stylist and say, who's, our stuff doesn't get you; why don't you try ______. But that makes it very tough; glad you posted. Isn't it interesting hiw even basics you need to find" your" versions-- necklines, length, hoe much shaping snd so on.

You have great curly hair, Robin. And that V-neck tee is excellent for your body type. It lengthens the neck and gives the bust plenty of room. A brunette in blue is a slam dunk. Good find.
