I have not seen White Lotus, but I thought this was an interesting breakdown of new shifts in fashion. Maximalism gone sideways?

Well, I have seen it, both seasons actually.

I thought no more than “young people fashion “ about Portia’s outfits. They had to make her a naive outsider and outfits were too literal for my taste but whatever. It’s was interesting to see how outfits play their role to underline characters in the show.

I love the show and think the costuming is so good. Portia's outfits totally resonate; I see them as an evocation of the ennui and frustration of being a broke 20-something working a thankless and humiliating job: if I can't look great, I can at least look weird, and: I'm definitely not in a position to take my life seriously. I was in my teens/early 20s in what we're now calling "the naughties" and I can for sure get behind the return of irony, though I'll probably be adding it in smaller doses than I did the first time around.

There was a lot of eye candy fashion on the show - Tanya, Harper, Lucia, Mia, Daphne- and Portia’s wardrobe fitted her character well.

I loved season 2 - even more than season 1.

I hope the mood shift is real - I can feel it- let’s hope it lasts.

I’m down with the weird sweater over the zebra bikini top, but I’m not entirely convinced of the explanation / description. That is, I’m not sure it’s a slobby look. Shabby maybe. The word ‘midway’ comes to mind… a carnival sideshow…

Haha so I was trendy in the Aughts doing this? Only kidding (mostly) It certainly was the most unstylish period of my life, buying too many clothes because they looked nice on the hanger and not necessarily on me, without any forethought about how to wear them with each other. Interesting read.

I thought season two was better than the first!

Portia’s style is a mess, of course, but it fits her character. That bandeau outfit was so awful, but it also sort of represented the situation she was (at that point unwittingly) getting into.

I loved watching the arc of Aubrey Plaza’s character’s fashion choices as that story line progressed.

It’s a really well done show.

We only watched the first 2 shows of season 1 and then stopped, not sure why - I think we just forgot about it. Then just last night we were looking for a new series to start and restarted The White Lotus. Now I will be watching the wardrobes intently

I'm certainly a slob, so yay!! But then again am I "that" kind of slob, i.e. cool girl slob? Doubtful! Do we have to be skinnies/pretties like Katie Holmes to qualify?

I wonder, if ANY thought goes into an outfit, can it be called messy?

I figure this is what happens when people buy into a bunch of aesthetics without doing wardrobe planning!
I'm not a TV watcher, but I am facinated by costume design!

I saw both seasons-first season was blah to me, but was delighted by the second one's sicilian venues, the casting, the rumors and the humors, majority of the actors themselves---and of course the costumes ...which were a 99%hit for each of the characters(Portia included). I will advice on skipping the first season and simply seeing the second one instead- there is really only a very subtle and not too vital connection between them.
