Menswear Trends?

The BF purged a pair of slacks two days ago, citing that nobody really wears the type of cuff it has anymore. I pestered to know more - how does he know this? I never see him refer to any sort of men's fashion publication or website. WHERE DO GUYS GET THEIR STYLING TIPS? Is it osmosis?

He always looks so pulled together, and he spends about .01% of the time that I do, obsessing over what to wear.

I am so glad to see we have some men's fashion on the forums, and I would love to know how you guys gather your information, and make your styling decisions. It all seems somewhat effortless on your part.

Guys don't have the options we do so there's less to think about.
For my SO, he does look at what other men are wearing and follows these rules:
#1 and most important: must not look like a hipster
#2 must blend in
#3 must always stay a step ahead of the other men while adhering to #1 and #2.

I think here mens fashion has really improved..Fits are more careful, colours are varied, footwear is much sharper, and grooming is a million times better!! I think they stick to tried and true.

Jon wears a simple self created uniform for work, depending on his needs during the day.

Jeans and polo and workboots (probably three pairs of jeans, five polo)

business trousers, button down, black business shoes (two pairs of trousers, seven shirts)

suit, shirt, tie, black business shoes (one suit only which we had tailored last year for a narrower more current fit)

He adds a merino or a jacket in winter months for the casual looks.

He wears more colour now, especially clear mid blue and red, and shades of pink. Often trendy runners or similar casually and more fitted shorter shorts which suit him as he is not long legged.

Last winter he added in a wool sports jacket which looks great with jeans in the evening.

He chooses based on comfort and he does not want to stand out in either a good or a bad way.

Smittie's initial response brings me to something else: What Defines a Hipster? Can women be hipsters? The term seemed to include women a few years ago, but I just realized I only ever hear it applied to men, as part of a larger phrase: "hipster dude".

By the way, BF rolled out of bed, dressed to go get a haircut and run some errands, and his outfit looks like something Daniel Craig wears during his downtime, while his suit is at the cleaners. Yeesh. It took me five minutes to pick out a top. Like, five real-time minutes.
