Men's workwear for Winter

I'm really asking this question for my boyfriend, not that he asked for my help But he just started a job this year that requires him to dress professionally. Prior to this, he was wearing mostly jeans and polos to work.

So I'm wondering, for those of you whose SOs wear professional attire like dress slacks and shirts, do they make any changes during the winter? My bf has been wearing the same penny loafer type shoes and light jacket even though it gets quite cold here in the DC area. What sort of winter coat and shoes would you recommend for him?

Regarding footwear -- my husband prefers dress shoes with a rubber sole for wear during the winter. He recently found some attractive dressy oxfords at Red Wing. The company specializes in work boots, but also makes some nice looking but practical dress shoes that can handle snow and ice.

What about boots? They can be as dressy or casual as the job requires, and would add a little extra warmth during the winter.

Thanks, El Cee and Hestonian. I will look into these options. My bf cannot be convinced to wear anything that isn't instantly comfortable, so he is very hard to please. I want to get him some new options for Christmas.

For longevity, look into shell cordovan boots from Alden or Allen Edmonds. If fitted properly (both brands have lots of width options) they're comfortable immediately but get better and better. Using wooden shoe stretchers at night preserves shape and absorbs moisture. Not a negligible initial outlay, but PPW so worth it.

If only they made women's shoes.

My husband wears the same work clothes year round. Button-down shirt, dress slacks or khakis, brown or black oxfords. A suit, blazer, and/or tie if the situation requires them. (He is a lawyer.) These are similar shoes, I think, and they do have a rubber sole so there is some warmth and traction:

He does wear different outerwear depending on the weather. For really cold weather he has a big wool greatcoat that goes below his knees that is very warm, and of course scarf, hat, and gloves.

Gracias, Amy and Diana. I did consider a great coat, but I just know he would never wear it. I was thinking maybe a peacoat. I wonder if it's too casual...

My husband has a nice black peacoat that doesn't seem to stick out in the DC area. It hits about hip length on him.

I think a peacoat would be great! One thing to consider is if he takes public transportation or otherwise commutes outdoors. J. likes the greatcoat because it keeps his legs warm during the commute. He has a 10 minute walk to the subway. Similarly, he has a long trench that he wears when it rains which keeps him dry and protects his clothes from the rain to some extent.
