Men's style question: Is it ok for white tees to show with unbuttoned shirts?

Angie's blog post about refreshing your man's style got me thinking about a question DH has had for years about white tees and unbuttoned shirts. Both my DH and my son wear those BR stretch pima tees Angie cited and love them for how they hold their shape. But my husband wishes the tees had a v-neck so they wouldn’t show when he wears his shirt unbuttoned for casual wear.

Is it a fashion faux pas to have a white tee show at the neckline when wearing a button shirt casually unbuttoned? DH seems to think it is…and I’m not sure.

Those Pima shirts do come in a V neck also!

I don't think it is a faux pas to show though.

You're right that the BR pima shirts come in v-neck, but unfortunately the stretch pima shirts come only in crew neck. It's the stretch that makes them so awesome!

I like seeing the tee neck show (as long as it's a presentable one and not the dreaded bacon neck).

Ruthe, I can see why a colored tee is acceptable. DH has no problem with that....but is a white tee that is clearly an undergarment still ok?

Well...it is either a peek of white tee or chest hair with a V neck LOL
My hubby wore V necks originally and this was the reason I switched him to crew. I think it looks more polished. As long as tee is in a good condition I think it gives more dimension to a man's outfit and totally fab!

For casual wear, I think a peak of white T-shirt is not just acceptable but looks nice.

I agree with Clara T. I always think it's a nice touch when I meet friends out after work, and the boys have their shirt sleeves rolled up and the collars open. It's sort of a business-to-relaxed-fun transition that's nice to see.

(Besides, I'd rather see a white tee peeking out, than a big ol' tuft of chest-carpet... Sorry... I couldn't resist.)

Clara, thanks for weighing in. Good to know that the tee is not only acceptable...but a good look in your eyes.

Sveta and LBD....you make great points about a glimpse of white tee being preferable to chest hair! And I agree, Sveta, that the condition of the tee is important.

I've never minded the white tee showing, but my husband seems really unsure about it. If we get enough consensus here I'll be able to convince him to let his tee show with no worries!

I think it's completely a matter of personal preference. Kind of like having your cami show or not. And I'm guessing bacon neck means a limp, stretched out neck, like undercooked bacon? Ewwww!

Hahahah, bacon neck! Never heard that before, but I love it!

I don't have any problem seeing the t shirt peek out. I think it adds a nice element of layering and, like LBD, would much rather see the shirt than chest hair.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Fashion plates I would say generally do not let the undershirt show. But actually, fashion plates don't wear undershirts. Well-dressed salt of the earth men do.
