McGinn coat (not NAS) - YouLookFab Forum

Interested in feedback on this coat. I bought it when I was at Nordstrom for NAS presale but it's not a sale item. My winter coat situation can use a little refreshing, and I liked the vibe of this with grey color, the black faux leather sleeves and the zippers. Technically, the size down from this fit better over one thin layer of clothing, but I would want this to allow for layering, and the sleeves are not very roomy. I will be trying this on with bulkier layers before making a final decision.

I know I also got the Trina Turk coat listed below, but the vibe is very different -- more classic, less edge. The TT is a bit more functional and practical -- the McGinn more fun.

What do you think of it on me, and what do you think of this as a good winter coat supplement? Our winters are not terribly cold in general, and I have plenty of shorter jackets, plus the JCrew tipped pea coat (again, a more classic piece). I have a burgundy wool coat that I still love (Laundry from about 5-6 years ago) and will keep, but I think it's time to give that coat a little rest. I purged two old short wool coats (one black, one brown) last winter.

ETA: pic 3 is the Trina Turk coat -- I just realized that I'm standing further from the mirror in the TT pic, and closer in the McGinn pic, which may be contributing to the impression of a larger shoulder.

That Trina Turk is a wonderful length and cut for a military inspired coat.
Very dashing but doesn't look all wannabee.

What a fab coat!!

The photos are a bit dark on my screen, Janet. My inclination is to say go for it! The style seems perfect for you. And it's different enough from the other coat to provide a distinct change.

It's tough for me to judge the fit. Are the shoulders slightly sharp/ exaggerated? And does it feel okay (not pulling) in the hip areas? I guess, as you said, you'll need to try with layers. But if it works that way, then I'd vote keep!

That coat is awesome, Janet! The zippers are very you. I just wonder if the shoulders aren't too wide, but maybe that will look different once you are wearing more clothes underneath? Even though it isn't a winter jacket per se, at least it offers coverage in the back too.

Suz, I think the shoulders are just a wee bit sharp, probably because of the inset panels. I like that. That actually appeals to my desire for structure in my upper half to balance my lower half. I don't mind a strong shoulder as long as it doesn't look awkward. I will definitely make sure the hip area is sufficient with layers underneath, too. I noticed no pulling at all in this size, whereas I noticed just a bit in the size 6 (one down from this).

I think it looks great on you.

I LOVE the coat! It does look slightly big, but that may be due to you sizing up to allow for layers or the fact that I can only get the first photo to load so I cannot see it closed! Either way, it definitely looks different enough from the other coat, and ought to be a keep!

I love the coat, but it does look a bit too big through the shoulders. I know what you mean about liking a sharp shoulder but this just seems too wide somehow.

Caro, you hit the nail on the head. I'm a sucker for moto details, but I like the refined style of this.

Interesting that some of you are seeing shoulder issues. There is a slight padded shoulder in this coat, but it doesn't really extend past my natural shoulder by much more than any other coat that allows for layers. I keep looking at the photos for what it is you are seeing, and I don't really see it. I will have to play with some layering with this coat, maybe tomorrow, and report back.

More feedback is of course welcome! I know there are lots of mixed media coats out there right now. I don't want to get into ultra expensive territory for something like this though. I guess this is a trendier piece, and it might date in a few years.

I like the idea of this coat, but somehow it makes you look broader than you really are, so I don't love it. I vote look for a different coat along these lines, but not this one.

Janet, it could be the photo angle. I actually like a sharp or slightly exaggerated shoulder myself, so that wouldn't be a nay from me.

Take a few more pics to compare if you get a chance. Although Parsley offers a great alternative. The Rudsak's black, though, and this one is that great charcoal.

May I see the McGinn coat from the back? Just to be my usual anal self about fit

Personally, I prefer the Trina Turk for your style. It's different to the many moto silhouettes that are hanging in your closet. My 2 cents!

I'm going to be the absolute outlier here, Janet - I feel this is too big on beautiful you and looks a bit stiff. I want to love it, but I feel it is making you look disproportionate, and I've never seen that in anything else you've worn. Could just be that I'm tired and my fashion eye is not getting enough exercise these days.

The TT coat is gorgeous! I tried it myself but couldn't make it work for me.

Hm! I actually think Una articulated what I couldn't put my finger on. The moto styling is too stiff and adds so much bulk to your chest and shoulders. It is different on a soft leather moto that molds to you.

I'm with Rae, I prefer the Trina Turk, it is very chic. I like the McGinn too but it is reading as almost black so I am seeing it as redundant to the Trina Turk.Which may not be the case at all; if it is a lighter charcoal as shown in the Nordstrom link then my opinion would change. Are you sure the 6 was too small, this 8 looks a little big to me.

I love the Trina Turk on you and the back detailing is unique and I imagine would add a nice comfort factor. The Mcginn is great with the zipper details and the grey color is super. It does look a little big

If you put the layers under the McGinn and that took up some of the slack, I might feel differently, but with these pics, I'd rate it lower than the Trina Turk on you. Both for fit and style.

I know you said it's not K/R, so it depends more on what you want from a second winter coat. . .
