Maybe this is why I don't wear lipstick

I have bought, and now returned, a half dozen lip colors that just do not look the same on me as they do in the package. One my BF recently quite accurately described as 'clownlike'. It was practically orange on me. http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-B.....B0084FIET2 Looks like a subtle red-like tint in the package. I'm so confused. Other colors look like they'll be too much and end up almost lighter than my natural lip color. http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-C.....g+lip+iris

I try and test the waters every now and then, always to my disappointment. I'd love to find a subtle red and almost nude both but am not holding my breath. And no, I will not spend department store pricing for lip goo. There has to be one out there for under $10.

When I find a brand and colour I like I stick to it and hope they won't stop making any time soon.

Maybe you can hold your breath, go to a dept store, and try try try as many colors as you can, until you find the holy grail. It might be worth it? A dept store tube might be 20-30, whereas for drugstore lipstick, you're already paying at least $10, right?

But I know of what you speak!

Have you tried the tinted Burts bees ones? I find they add just a subtle shade - perfect for those who don't love the full colour.

The Boots line at Target has a sheer variant that's quite nice. I don't like how they redesigned the package because now they don't fit in my vintage lipstick holder in the bathroom, but besides that! I believe it's called Sheer Temptations, or Sheer <something> anyway.

I do not care for the taste of most lipsticks but I found I really like Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine. They have good colors and no taste.

Have you tried Revlon's ColourStay Ultimate Suede ones? I love colour 070 as a neutral for me, and its reds are true reds and I loooove. I just do a light dab and it gives me enough colour but is sheer enough I can wear to work. I just layer it on like normal if I'm going out.

Frankly I use drugstore mascara, but do department store foundation, blush and lip products. Plus a lipstick for me lasts a hell of long time.

I feel your pain! I had problems with lipstick for the longest time. I finally found one that's just a little darker/brighter than my natural lip color and it's all I wear. I just keep buying the same stuff when it runs out. I even had to order it online recently because my local Walgreens wasn't carrying it anymore. I use Revlon Colorstay Ultimate in Nude, but I don't expect that to work for everyone.

Have you tried stores like Sephora or Ulta? They have their own brands and run about $12 a tube at Sephora (I think Ulta's cheaper). You could get an SA to help and try them all on until you find one that works for you.

I must remind many of you that I live near no 'real' stores, and add to that don't even have a car for the next many months, maybe a year! So, no, no Ulta or fancy place like that lol. Belk is the only option other than drugstores for in person buying.
I do have 2 lip glosses that I like well enough (Almay in what looks bubblegum pink in the tube but goes on much sheerer http://www.amazon.com/Almay-Co.....B00CTR47FQ, and a Clinique in Sunset which is a kind of golden coffee tone I guess). I just would really like to get a lasting color of some kind that won't kiss off at first meet with the BF, hence the attempt at the long wearing formulas.

Sara, I'll look into the Colorstay ultimate in Nude - thanks for the tip. I seem to have medium colored lips to start with, so some nudes look chalky whitish.

The closest I got to a red was what I expected to be a coffee color lol. http://www.amazon.com/REVLON-J.....B009UWAIVA I just don't like the stain pen part. It seems to color dry spots differently than regularly moisturized parts.

Mo, some drug stores like CVS allow you to return lippies and the like that you've already tried at home. Satisfaction guaranteed and all that. This is because they no longer have testers in the store.

I think my body chemistry is changing such that a lot of stuff is turning orange on me that didn't previously. Maybe this is happening to you? I dunno if expensive lipstick is less likely to do this, but it seems that the richness, depth, and nuance of color seems to go up with $$$.

I LOVE this stuff. It's WAY better than the stuff you linked which I found to be drying and rather uneven when applied. This stuff is like a crayon that gets a little darker after application. http://www.revlon.com/Revlon-H.....Stain.aspx I also like Revlon Colorstay lipsticks. I think they have a great color selection.

LOL - Kelly that is what I tried that the BF deemed clownlike!!! I liked the feel, just not the way the colors turned out.

Donna, I did return the 'clown like' colors today to Walgreen's (didn't know they took returns but found out last night when there shopping for something else). But now, I've returned those 2 colors (buy one get one half off) for 2 more colors that aren't working and I feel conspicuous coming right back again, you know? These ones aren't as bad, but they're not great either. Sigh.

Oops, I guess I should click on the links! Duh! I really love that stuff but find it gets darker after it is applied. I have "honey" which is almost like a nude on me.

Mo - I have the same problem with lipsticks turning orange on me - so, I end up having to really go out of my way to buy something that leans towards the lavendar/purple color tones. Right now I am really liking 'Revlon Colorstay Overtime' in Forever Pink - and in Keep Blushing. They last forever on your lips and if you use a little nude lip-liner - they won't bleed on you!

Haven't read the responses, but I think reds and nudes are the most difficult to shop for!

I think first you need to find out what your lips are doing to add to the problem. Only then will you be able to fix it! I had the same problem for years, nothing was ever the color it seemed, and I was a serial bad lipstick buyer. Finally a department store lady told me that nothing ever works because my lip color is brown with very pink undertones, and most colors will appear pink or orange on me. both are horrible colors on my mouth!

Now, everything must be tried on, and around here you can't return drugstore makeup, so I bite the bullet and buy from makeup counters --where I can return one that goes wrong.

I have had luck with layering a lip pencil under shades to change their tone. For example a red pencil looks garish by itself, but it I use another shade over it then it becomes rich and layered. I've used brown shades to get an earthy red, coppery tones because they suit my coloring, pinks, fuchsia, coral. Some are to bright to wear day-to-day but my point is that sometimes colors combined are more interesting and workable than either alone.

But I feel your pain, ref. lipsticks. very few work for me either, I'm sticking mostly to tinted lipbalms for weekdays.
