Maxi skirt and problem jacket - need help!

Hubby took the kid out to dinner, leaving me to my own devices! Here is the black jersey maxi skirt and a shot of it as a strapless dress (not sure I'd wear this out unless over a black cami, as you sure can see that I've got SHOULDERS).

With the maxi is a BR mustard jacket/coat/blazer - I love it, but I can't figure out if it is supposed to be outerwear or not. Thus, it's been sitting in my closet for two years. It is a heavy lined poly-rayon, and it has confusing bracelet sleeves. Is it a jacket or a blazer?

Obviously I need help styling both of these items!

That blazer is fab - you definitely need to figure out some way to wear that beauty. Have you tried it with a short pencil skirt? How about your new leather skirt? Is the fabric too heavy to scrunch the sleeves?
I really like your new dress with the yellow shoes! Come visit me - it's definitely warm enough here to wear that out & about.

Sleeves are too heavy to scrunch, and the weight is like one of those j. crew cloth coats. I so want to wear this jacket somehow! It has a vintage style that I love. I will have to try it over a pencil skirt or a sheath. What about pants?

Hmmm... I also think the jacket is outerwear. Gut reaction. You could try it with flares, scrunched sleeves, and brown driving gloves.

I think I like your maxi-turned dress, too! When I've tried to turn skirts into dresses, I always have weird bagging at the armpits. I don't see that on yours, though... is the waist/bust smocked?

I would call that an outerwear jacket. Wear it over a jeans outfit.

Rae, it's got one of those waistbands like yoga pants that is like a band across the boobs. Though not sure it will stay up if I actually flail around like I do most of the time - wardrobe malfunction is highly likely.

I LOVE that coat - the color, the style, the sleeves are fab! I'm thinking along the lines of spring coat weight. (We would have called it an Easter coat.)

But with its mustard color it would be a great fall or spring coat. Wear it over any outfit - as you would the leopard coat but in slightly warmer weather

I think the black skirt works nicely as a tube dress too -- you have great shoulders!
Just wear a black strapless bra that you feel secure in and use fashion tape or pins to make sure they stay together.

Like that jacket, whatever you want to call it. I agree with everyone else that your
shoulders are wonderful and the "dress" looks great. I can't wear the dress option
on most skirts that can be worn that way - they end up hiked up at the front hem - but on the ones I can, I sometimes add my own wide straps and then when I want to wear
it as a skirt, just drop them inside.

I like your jacket! I think it needs something fitting underneath, so I agree with the others - outerwear which with slim jeans/pencil skirt could look great. Otherwise the rest of you is going to look as wide as the widest part of the jacket - with the black skirt in photo1 you look bigger than you are.

I have a similar coloured jersey which I find hard to style, but I've discovered it works well with jeans, a white shirt looks great with it and animal print or 'black and white' as accents seem to go too. (And it's really hoping that Karen Kane will take pity on it and send it her animal print dress!

I'd wear the mustard coat/ jacket as a spring/ cool summer outerwear layer with slimmer fit bottoms x

Can't believe that jacket has been sitting in your wardrobe...it's stunning. I think it's outer wear. It looks like it is coat weight. Wear with pencil skirts, jeans, shift dresses (straight skirt) and pants. Have a play and see what works, I think you will find lots of options for this beautiful jacket

Outerwear. Stunning on you. Pair with warm sweater. Or wear inside in a more formal setting when it's not well heated.Here are some situations that come to mind:

- Cocktails in large ballrooms, or in hotel facilities opened on a terrasse in Fall or Spring;

- Getting in and out of private jets;

- Dinner in a castle;

- Standing smiling in a drizzle for what seems like an eternity while your husband shakes the hands of some foreign countries hot shots;

- Some courtrooms;

- Teaching a class in an under-funded university department where classrooms' thermostats are deficient,

- Church, in cases where thermostat would be equally deficient;

- Receiving the Nobel prize or other prize;

- Doing an outdoor press conference about your high profile client outside city hall during Fall or Spring.

However, I would not pair it with this maxi skirt. Tailored cropped pants or palazzos, or maybe your leather skirt and tall boots?

Love the jacket. I vote that it's outerwear! Wear it with something simple and slim underneath (sheath dress, jeans and heeled boots, etc.)--and opera-length leather gloves!

I vote for outerwear on the jacket. I love it! I like the color with the maxi dress but the cut of the jacket doesn't work with the maxi. It's got a subtle a-line to it and that's too much volume on top and bottom. Velma is right...match that jacket with something slim on the bottom like a pencil skirt or tailored pants. Try to keep it with something in the cool color palette, like this nice royal blue or dark violets...which are in for Fall 2011! It will look great with those colors!

I think the jacket is outwear - and it's FABULOUS! The color is beautiful for fall (sorry to say the "f" word!) and would look smashing over dark skinnies and boots.

And I think the maxi skirt as a dress looks gorgeous on you!

that jacket looks to me like outerwear for early fall-hence the shorter sleeves. It's gorgeous, you really need to wear it out. If it was me-I'd wear it with some well-tailored long black wide leg pants. IMHO you cannot wear it with something too skinny... it may look strange. You need some volume and length on the bottom.
as for the dress-I think it needs a more fitted jacket than the yellow one. you look great in it by itself.

Una, that is a GORGEOUS jacket. You are right about the retro vibe. They wore these in the 50s with pencil skirts and dresses. Laughed out loud at what krishnadoux said. Agree wholeheartedly!

I love your shoulders and say, wear that dress with abandon on your next trip to Hawaii!

Krishnadoux - you have a fantastice imagination! Or maybe Una really does these things? Funny, nevertheless.

I vote for outerwear on the gold jacket. Worn with black blouse and dark wine skinnies, and a scarf that picks up some of the color, you can wear as a fall outside jacket and take it off when inside where it's warmer.

However, if you pair it with a soft but fairly close-fitting, deep plum long sleeved sweater, and allow the sleeves to show, and a charcoal gray bottom piece, and a heavy gold pendant necklace, you could probably wear it for office wear, esp. on very cold fall days and into winter.

Oooh, thanks for all the help! I would not wear the maxi with this jacket - it was just quicker to photograph this way.

It looks like the jacket is outerwear, and I will wear it as such. With temps in the 50s here, it might be worn very soon!

May I just say that if you do not wear that maxi as a strapless dress you will be ROBBING the world of your magnificent arms and shoulders! You are gorgeous! (Also love the jacket as outerwear!)

I too think of the jacket as outerwear. I can see that as a spring/summer/early fall jacket. Love the retro vibe, and you are certainly going to need some long gloves with all the bracelet sleeve jackets you're getting ready to use Brown or cognac would look fab with this jacket. To keep from looking overly sweet, I would pair this with black/faded/distressed slim denim, boots/booties, chunky sweaters, wool shorts+tights, your nifty leather pencil skirt...

The skirt-turned-dress looks gorgeous! Show those amazing shoulders off, lady! Perhaps pair with a sheer/crochet cardigan if the opportunities to be strapless are few?

I agree with everyone else on the jacket. Definitely outerwear needing something slim underneath. I actually prefer the maxi skirt as a dress!
