Maxi skirt again ETA new pic at the end

I've been looking in the stores, but I haven't found a nice pullover to wear with the maxi skirt so far. We're going to the opera on Thursday, so I thought I'd have a look if I find an alternative to the blazer in my own wardrobe just in case. The only thing that isn't too casual for this occasion and goes with the skirt is my navy turtleneck. But maybe it's a bit boring? I don't think I want to wear the blazer, but I'm not sure this is a true alternative.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

I'm missing something here. A few things come to mind: structure and/or sparkle and/or jewellery... I am not sure what, but I'd like to see the outfit livened up with something. If it makes any sense.

I actually like the combination of black and navy (not visible on my monitor, but I know it and love the two togehter). I find it super-chic.

Any chance to see your waist a bit better? It looks to me like the turtleneck is over the skirt. That's hiding your figure. Can you add belt to the outfit somehow? Maybe even some thin sparkly belt (C&A or H&M has that sort of thing almost always) would do a lot to this.

Another suggestion would be a sort of top that exposes your skin a bit more, some nice shell shirt so we can see your neck, worn with a wrap. Any chance to try something along those lines?

Thanks Ornella! Yes, that makes sense. It is a bit drab. The turtleneck is over the skirt, yes. I can't really tuck into the skirt because it has an elastic waist in the back and it sits a tad too low to belt over it to hide the waistband. I could belt a top I'm wearing over it I guess. But I don't really have any dressy tops (shells) I could wear with it, I feel like my wardrobe is one big black hole actually. I could look for something though - I mostly looked for long sleeved tops the last few days, not for a kind of shell. Of course then I'd have to have something to layer over it. What do you mean by wrap? Oh and I do have a fashion jewelry pearl necklace, but they're dark grey and kind of dissapear on a dark top.

I think I liked it better with the blazer- this doesn't seem very festive.

Or, another thought: Do you have a nice white blouse?

Thanks Parsley. No, I don't have a white blouse. All my button downs/blouses are rather casual, I don't think one of them would work with the skirt. The biggest problem with the blazer was what to wear under it. Maybe I could look for a shell, like Ornella suggested, to go with it.

I like the draped neckline on the top you're wearing under the blazer. I think the skirt needs a top with some interesting structure to balance out the look. A boatneck or ballet neck top would be nice - I'm picturing some sort of Helmut Lang-ish structured neck.

Anyway, I like the blazer option better than the turtleneck, of the two. And even though I'm awful at accessories, this occasion seems like the perfect time for a big costume necklace.

Parsley, thanks for linking to Angie's outfit. I have an identical skirt and hadn't considered wearing it with a crisp white shirt. Now I want an excuse to try it!

I think Ornella is on to something with the structure or sparkle. What is the waistband of the skirt like, could you tuck and belt?

I see in your post that the turtleneck is navy, but it is reading black on my screen. Maybe you have a dressy black top that would work?

Thanks Greyscale! I don't have a real statement necklace, I'm very minimalistic with jewelry in general. But I can see how that would be nice. Seems like the blazer might be a better idea after all.

It has an elastic waist and belting doesn't work all that well because it sits below my waist (I'm very shortwaisted) and I have problems to get belts to stay where they should when they don't sit in my waist. I don't really have any dressy tops, my life is very casual and I don't really have the need to dress up. And a lot of my dressier stuff I got for different occasions doesn't fit anymore. I did look for something a bit dressier already, but I didn't find anything that was worth the money.

Okay, here's the blazer again. This time with a black top and belted. I'd forgotten about this belt and it just about works, but only with the blazer. It's an old one so it gives me slight muffin top - I need the blazer to cover it. I think the belt only works because it's a column of color, I tried it with another top tucked that wasn't black and it didn't look all that good because there wasn't enough top and too much skirt. My waist is just that high...

The last rendition is nice, I like the belting. I also still like the wine top. The turtleneck looks too casual.

Much better. I think this top is so much better and youthful. And I love the shiny belt buckle and the bracelet.

I think you found a winner! The proportions look quite good. (I'm biased towards all black, so of course I like it.)

That belt works well. If you ever wanted to dress it up even more, I could also imagine an embellished black belt in its place. (Embroidered or beaded or such.)

Aw, too bad about the belt fit, the colour looks like a perfect match to the skirt. IMO this looks pretty darn good, just needs a little something sparkly.
I feel your pain with the belt placement - I am short waisted too and a belt has to be at my waist or in loops.

Thanks Tracina. Yes, you're right that the turtleneck is too casual, I see that now. I do like the wine top for the color, but somehow all that drape looks too much to me paired with the skirt. The black top has more structure.

Thanks Ornella! I agree that it looks better when you see some skin like in the last pic. Seems like I do have a solution without having to shop, that's all the better. Although I do need to keep my eyes open for some dressier options when I go shopping again, it's no fun if you have so few options.

Thanks Greyscale! It isn't all black, the skirt and belt are navy. I really like navy and black together. I agree, some dressy belt might look nice with it. It's something to keep in mind.

Thanks Emily! I'm just happy I can wear the belt again at all, there was a time I couldn't even close it so I'm seeing this as a positive thing. I could look for a new wide belt that fits better, might be nice to have in any case. No idea what to do about the sparkle though... Not sure I could get much further use out of a sparkly belt.

Thanks Ramya! I do wear my Oma's sparkly bracelet, it's actually the biggest piece of jewelry I have when it comes to bangles and bracelets.

I would wear the blazer and pretty draped top outfit. It looks more evening-ish. Can you borrow some sparkly jewelry? I hate to shop urgently for accessories and get something I won't use again. But if you have a fun accessory store and see a short sparkly necklace or bracelet that's reasonably priced and you like for you and not just this one event, that could be good.

Thanks Unfrumped. I agree, shopping with a deadline isn't good. Although I'm getting better at it or I would have bought a not so perfect top to wear with the skirt. We do have a few of those fashion jewelry chains around, so I could have a look there. But I don't wear jewelry all that often and when I do I normally prefer to wear better fashion pieces or real jewelry. I haven't really bought jewelry for a certain outfit since my teens. Most of my jewelry pieces were presents, when I buy jewelry myself it's mostly when I'm somewhere on a trip or holiday. Or I wear my "heirlooms".

Well, here's the deal: you wear that outfit just as it is, you go to the opera, you will look lovely, you will totally enjoy it, and no one will be thinking about your outfit, unless it's you! You continue to shop wisely for items that you need & want and avoid panic shopping.
